Hello everyone |waves|
Uugh, I have switched hosting companies and am having trouble hooking up in FTP. I am transferring a domain.

1.Do you just enter the IP address and username and password and wala, your up, or is there more I need to do? Because it shows that I am connected but not using any of the space that was purchased from hosting company.

2.What the fuck is the primary and secondary DNS servers and where do I change that info?

As for the first part, some companies do it differently. You might look for an httpdocs, public_html or www directory -- perhaps one of those directories exists. Normally you would connect to the assigned IP (assuming your DNS hasn't been changed).

Your domain registrar would be where you need to change the nameservers. You need to log into the place where you bought the domain, and change it to the NameServers that your new hosting company provides. They might list this in the welcome letter or a FAQ in the control panel.

DNS updates can take up to 48 hours depending on the registrar. Some Registrars do it more quickly. I registered a domain the other day and it was live within an hour.

Your primary and secondary DNS is the info that your name registry needs so that your domain name resolves to your host. If you do not change this info then your domain will continue going to your old host.

So if your domain registry is DirectNic then you would login to your DIrectNic admin and change it there.

Primary and Secondary DNS is provided to you by your hosting company. Look on an FAQ page or something like it and it should be there. If not, ask the host.

And, the ip address, username and password should do it. You are probably uploading in the wrong directory. Or, maybe not.

I just got a message stating:

Nameserver update completed.
Please note that it may take up to 48 hours for your changes to take effect.

48 hours yikes

As stated above, many registrars claim that, but, in reality, if it is a .com, the nameserver change is pushed to the root servers rather quickly if it is a large Registrar.

Once those changes are pushed, new requests will see your site. Its anyone that visited within the last 0-48 hours that MIGHT see the old site. Depending on how your prior host set up their DNS info, as time passes, more and more people will see the new site. 48 hours seems to be about the outside guess for 100% of the traffic to have moved over.

I just don't get it, it shows I am connected on my FTP program, stats at the hosting company show me using space, changed the DNS stuff, and I am still getting that http 404-file not found error on every page. I believe that this should be it and it should be running, I think. |dizzy|

If I´m not wrong, using ftp there offers two possibilities to connect to the server. First is domainname, second one is ip - address. IP address of your new host always works. Domainname doesn´t work until dns has changed. Otherwise domainname will point to your old host, I think.

You should also be able to preview your uploaded content by using the following format:

http://your.ftp.ip/~username/

Don't forget the trailing / as it is important.
