Is This Really "Art"?

http://www.christojeanneclaude.net/tg.html

25 years in the making (Christo came up with the concept back in 1979)

$20 million to get it set up (out of Christo's pocket from what I hear)

I'm far from being a cultured man, but calling this collection of poles & curtains "art" is a bit far fetched for me.

MrMaryLou 2005-02-15 09:17 AM

Looks like curtains to me :)

Cleo 2005-02-15 09:19 AM

Isn't this the same person that wrapped the islands in Biscayne Bay down here in pink fabric?

Yeah I don't get it either but then I also don't get cum shot galleries.

Greenguy 2005-02-15 09:22 AM

Cleo - this crap?
http://christojeanneclaude.net/si.html

...and I'd bet more people get cumshot galleries than do this stuff :D

Cleo 2005-02-15 09:28 AM

Yeah that is it. lol

I seem to also remember that he did umbrellas and that one of them fell over and killed someone on his last "art" thing.

I'm going to put yesterday's meal up for art after I produce it this morning and see how much I can sell it for.

tiny 2005-02-15 09:31 AM

Thats what happens when you have too much time and money I guess 40yrs haha

Torn Rose 2005-02-15 09:37 AM

I thought the same thing, but if he has $21 million to spend on this.... he must be doing something right.....

Greenguy 2005-02-15 09:42 AM

I heard he sells sketches & paintings & whatnot in order to raise money for these big stupid projects of his.

You'd think that he'd also sell these afterwords & make a couple bucks, but no. Everything will be recycled - I can see the aluminum, as it's cost effective to recycle that - but the plastic curtains? It costs $150 a ton to properly recycle plastic - it costs $50 a ton to properly dispose if it in a garbage land fill (and no matter what anyone says, we've got plenty of room in the existing land fills for another 1000 years of garbage)

adamneve 2005-02-15 09:44 AM

i'm sure bukkake is an art

Cum shots are not art. Group cum shots...now that's a thing of beauty.

Cleo 2005-02-15 10:26 AM

I just got out of the shower so I'm sitting in my bungee office chair naked which gives me waffle butt. Maybe I should take pics of my butt and call it Waffles In The Morning.

cd34 2005-02-15 10:54 AM

reminds me of when I used to run through the sheets hanging on the clothesline.

Amazes me that someone took 25 years and $20 million to dream this stuff up. I could have done it in a few hours, and for $18 million.

But you didn't :D

ABCNews did a story on him, he wanted to do this 20 years ago, but could not get a permit from NYC, Goldblum (that’s the NYC mayor right?) is a fan of his and gave him the permit.

cd34 2005-02-15 11:21 AM

Bloomberg.

And I was 3 days from getting the final permitting. Now I'll look like a copycat.

Art is anything people will look at by choice. So yes, this is art. But then so is a badly preserved shark slowly rotting in a tank art, so is a car crash art, so is a big fire art, and yes, so is a cumshot picture art (although I think technically a cumshot gallery is not, it is a collection of works of art - the clue is in the word gallery)

KCat 2005-02-15 07:56 PM

I LOVE this:

"Each separate "gate" would be merely a relic of the artwork and not a work of art. Seven thousand, five hundred structures together in Central Park IS a work of art."

So...my shower curtain on its own is not a work of art, but if I got together 7500 shower curtains & strung 'em up in Central Park, that would be genius. I'm off to Ikea!

Robbo 2005-02-15 09:49 PM

No less art than people hanging suspened by thier chests on either side of the stage for a Sepultura concert I guess or the Mona Lisa hanging in a cold gallery hallway for that matter. I think the couple summed it up best when they said simply "we do it for ourselves, if others like it that`s juat a bonus." What money can`t buy these days. You get to redecorate central park for 20 mil or so!

Like music and other pursuits of passion they just have to come out no matter how rediculous or obscure just as humans must emote in any other fashion.

Wenchy 2005-02-15 09:49 PM

My first thought was that it reminded me of a scene in the movie Wolfen. But art? Not in my book... Weird and tacky yes, but not art :/

Cleo 2005-02-15 09:51 PM

Really he should just learn to use Photoshop.

Yell 2005-02-15 09:58 PM

Looks like TP to me. |mml|

King Porn 2005-02-15 10:12 PM

I read about this in my local paper. Seems crazy to me to spend $20 mil for a 16 day display! If I had $20 mil I could think of a lot of better ways to spend it.
