Before you even try to get listed or make trades you will need some links.

Get links by offering no recip listings for a limited time, listing your own sites, listing sponsor free hosted sites and by surfing other linklists to find sites you like. (note if you do the later remember to make your own descriptions or else it is stealing!!!)

Oh right.. sorry that's what I ment in the above post...
