Is this legal ?

A question for US webmasters:

I just looked into using Google Adwords and found that because I am British I have to pay twice as much to sign up, and have about 75% higher minimum bid. Over here (England) it is illegal to charge someone a higher price on grounds of race, don't you have a similar law ?

swedguy 2005-03-15 09:17 AM

Hmmm, I didn't have any problems like that when I signed up. I found one thing though...

Do Brits consider themselves to be a different race? :D

SirMoby 2005-03-15 09:51 AM

That's not charging based race. It's charging extra based on geographical location, which is legal and very common practice in many countries and industries. It would be based on race if they specifically asked about your race or religeous background.

They do speak a totally different language :)

We haven't liked you guys since 1776 :D

Was it the UK version of Google?

Others agree. ;)

England and America are two countries separated by the same language - George Bernard Shaw

We (England) have really everything in common with America nowadays except, of course, language - Oscar Wilde

dareutwo 2005-03-15 10:20 AM

I'm guessing the the Euro being that high, I'd charge you 2x as well.
LOL at the rest of these posts.

ecchi 2005-03-15 10:46 AM

RE "They do speak a totally different language" yeah, we speak English, sorry about yours. :)

RE: "That's not charging based race. It's charging extra based on geographical location" In most countries "nationality" is covered by the same laws as "race" IE. I cannot put a notice outside my shop saying "We do not serve niggers or packies" and I can also not put up a notice saying "We do not serve Americans of French".

RE: "We haven't liked you guys since 1776" Yeah, and we have not forgiven you for that tea incident either. :)

ecchi 2005-03-15 10:49 AM

RE: "I'm guessing the the Euro being that high" The Euro is not high, the Dollar is low, and that is the fault (deliberate plan) of George W.

Head Boy 2005-03-15 11:18 AM

What really pisses me off is Sedo charging me twice as much as they charge Americans. They use a .co.uk domain, and they insist on paying in some local currency called the Euro.

That must explain why I'm the only new link list in living memory not to be invited to send MrMaryLou a private message :(

Greenguy 2005-03-15 12:58 PM

Thumbler - If you'd like to get listed on our Traffic Resource Pages then please send MrMaryLou a Private Message with the name & URL of your traffic site (Link List, TGP, etc) and he'll take care of the rest |shake|
(assuming that you haven't done so already - LOL)

(sorry)

LOL |thumb
Thanks Greenguy - I did actually send him one yesterday in anticipation of your invitation :D

Thumbler 2005-03-15 02:29 PM

And now I've received the official invite, I've added a greenguyandjim banner to my webmaster page :D

Were did you find this information. When I look at
https://adwords.google.com/select/Af...USD&country=US
and
https://adwords.google.com/select/Af...USD&country=GB
the fee is exactly the same

Only when you want to pay in other currencies a difference exists. But that is not related to your country. Try
https://adwords.google.com/select/Af...EUR&country=US

Out of interest, what do you mean by 'you brits' ?

If you're Scottish, that makes you a brit yourself........ :D

ecchi 2005-03-16 02:21 AM

RE: "Were did you find this information" If you attempt to access Google from a British IP No they redirect you to their British site, the charges come up then.

RE: "Since i am Scottish I think you brits should have to pay 30X as much and 10,000% minimum bid" Fine, but Google (and most non British companies) put Scotland and England in the same list. So if we pay 30X as much and 10,000% minimum bid, then so do you.

You're lucky to be able to say you're Scottish. If I say I'm English then all the socially inadequate do-gooders start saying that I'm making racist statements.

RE: "You're lucky to be able to say you're Scottish. If I say I'm English then all the socially inadequate do-gooders start saying that I'm making racist statements." That is one of the reasons I tend to say I am "English" rather than "British". The other reason is that too many Americans have no idea what "British" means and usually ask where "Britaria" is, but are at least vaguely aware that England is on a small island of the coast of Europe (wherever Europe may be).

Oh yeah, and there is also the fact that I don't want to be associated with a race of men who wear skirts and think Mel Gibson is their national hero. :)

British? Aren't they the ones who make the encyclopedias?
