animated 486x60 file size?

Im building some animated 486x60 banner ads and i am wondering what should be a max file size? currently sitting at 300K. is that too much? These are to be displayed on other peoples sites.

Read somewhere that someone does not want more than 100K for on his site. Is that typical?

300k is wayyyyy too big. you should be no bigger than 50k. under 30k is even better. most of the banners i see in my freesite folders are in the mid 20k rang.

under 50K!?!?! Yikees!

Back to the drawing board.

Try and go different to the standard size of 486x60, a lot of ad blocking programs will block anything that size. A few pixels above or below on both sides will help a bunch :)

Yup, yup, you know it. |thumb

Odd sized banners rock because anything atypical is more likely to grab the surfer's attention, when compared to standard sized banners and, as the venerable gentleman from the UK stated above, the odder the size, the less likely they'll get blocked by the likes of Norton and other blocking proggies.

Well, after a lot of tinkering, I got it to under 40K, by a mere cunt hair, after dropping the extra animation in the moving background which now makes the background static instead of the constant shimmer of movement i had originally envisioned in my minds eye, but, thats the comprimise that has to be made when you have constraints on things like file size and now you tell me I dont need to be constrained by the standardized banner sizes in order to increase views from people with ad blockers and garner some interest because its a slightly different size than expected.

I think I have just dethroned you UW |king|

Thanks for the great feedback guys 'n' gals
