Sqaure thumbs - fast way to make them?

I notice more and more people moving to using square thumbs... any easy way to make them besides cropping existing thumbs? I am sort of looking for a one step rather than multi-step process.

thanks

Alex

You could make an action in ImageReady pretty easily but how would it know what part of the pic was best to crop. My TGP does this from the submitted galleries. I have to laugh at what it grabs sometimes.

Cleo, I haven't enjoyed the end results of any of the automated systems I have seen so far. What I have been doing is going in through photoshop and cropping a square area I like and then using a different program to process all the thumbs down to the size I want, when I need a "mad thumbs" style single per gallery.

To resize and entire gallery, I am finding that allowing a slightly oversize thumb to be made, and then processing the whole pile with a crop is the only way I am getting square thumbs for page layout. I was hoping someone had a better way than all this poking around.

Yeah I've never seen any program that knows where I want a pic cropped.

I prefer ImageReady over Photoshop for doing web graphics, but when I need to make square thumbs from rectangle pics I don't know of any decent way other then by hand.

Are you talking about just making those single 88x88 thumbs for thumb preview TGPs, or square thumbs for whole galleries?

For 88x88 thumbs for preview TGPs, I've settled on starting up photoshop 5.5 (loads faster, thats why an old version, unless I already have a newer version open.), shft-alt selection to square select the models face, then an action to resize and save for web.

There are other tools that do okay to make square thumbs for whole galleries, altho all of them have their limitations.

The version of ImageReady that I'm using you can check use "Fixed Size" with the crop tool. I can't remember if earlier versions of Photoshop had this or even if the new Photoshop has this since I don't have it open at the moment. Works real well when I just need to do one thumb.

Saw this today, looks interesting.

"Bosco’s Foto Trimmer (“Foto Trimmer” for short) scales, stretches, squishes, rotates, flips, and trims digital images. It adjusts the brightness, contrast, and color level of your image. With its Fixed Size feature, Foto Trimmer can automatically scale and trim images to common sizes, such as banner ads, greetings cards, or a standard size you use for photographs on a web page."

30 day demo, Mac or Windows

$25 if you like it.
