Is it ok to use a counter for my freesites?
 

I feel totally lost and I would really like to use one(sexcounter)to know from where I'm getting clicks. ;)

By using these counters on your pages you are giving others the ability to run code on your pages this means that they can install trojans, viruses, spyware, and other nasty little creepy things.

Use your server stats.

Third party counters are an instant decline for me :(

It still varies from link list to link list, but to be on the safe side, use your server stats & forget the 3rd party counters :)

It is an unfortunate world we live in where everyone is too paranoid to use a simple tool designed to greatly increase a site's productivity if used effectively.
As far as I know (and being the developer of sexcounter that's what's important), it's not possible to install trojans simply via an image tag. If you aren't interested in your surfers web browser characteristics and desktop settings then you can, by all means, use Sexcounter's non javascript counter to give you the best stats in the industry.

I think there's still a lot of people who has the Porngraph fiasco fresh in mind.

It is true, Magnoody, and it is not worth to risk that some LLs won't list you. You will waste your work. Counter is a part of your page and you have no control over it. You do not know what image will be shown, or what code will be run. This is the biggest problem. The other thing is that you will lose a part of your hard earned traffic on counters. Ask your webhosting company if they run some web analytic software and if not, ask them to give you access to your logs and get such a software yourself. Most of webhosting companies will do it for you. Anyway, if you think you must have a counter on your page, then you should go with a reputable company that's been around a while.

I decline all site with scripting on the page or images from third party sources. If you are not 100% controlling the content of your site, I cannot list it.

I already use the raw access log with weblog lite and I get an overview of my traffic.
yet sexcounter has much more options and was recommended to me on another board for being very clean and trusted.the counter is even invisible and so it's not a traffic leak.

But I understand your point of having a script that I don't control and I won't add it to my freesites ;)

There's an invisible form of Sexcounter? I've never seen one.

I never understood why third party counters weren't considered as another link out back when they were accepted, since they are most definately a link out.

On a more serious note, can we please stop spreading FUD.
Sexcounter is one of a few counters who use no visible counter image and are most certainly not a link out from your pages.

I gotta ask if your counter is not visible and there is no click to you then why do it for free?

Sure makes you wonder? I have yet to see a third party counter as reliable as a good server stats program.

There are more ways than one to make money from a counter without resorting to making money through clicks. Whilst making money through clicks might be seen as a more lucrative method, a service doesn't have to exist with a sole purpose of being a revenue stream.

Using spyware/trojans and other nasties on Sexcounter would be so detrimental to the image of all the above that you can hopefully recognise that it won't ever happen. Furthermore, why not use our pure image counter combined with SSI to track your referers and a good portion of our other stats without using any javascript.
