Sound editing programs

I’ve never played with the mp3 or wav or mid so I have no idea how to make my own sound files. And playing with my new phone I have some files but want to edit them somewhat.

Suggestions on what to use?

I use Sound Forge by Sony & it's very expensive (but I had to buy it for the radio show stuff)

Sound Forge is TOP NOTCH, adobe audition is also good, but more of a multitracker than a stereo sound editor. I use both, I record a good deal of bands on my 8-track recorder then dump it down digitally.

Torn - believe me, if I didn't need it for the radio show, I wouldn't have bought the damn thing :)
