Please help me pick a Link List script

Hello all! |waves|

I am starting my first Link List and would like some help picking the script to run it with. I have two main requirements:

1) I would like to stay under $150 if possible. I feel that since it is a hentai niche Link List, its not likely to get a ton of submissions or grow very big, I probably don't need all the functionality in the world and don't need to spend too much on the script.

2) From what I understand, it seems important for the script to be able to build static pages because dynamic pages are not search engine friendly. That rules out many of the cheaper scripts. :(

I've read threads on this board and checked out the scripts mentioned, it seems like maybe one of the following might fit the bill...
- Hot Links SQL v3
- Link Up Gold
- Gossamer Links 2.0
...but I'm open to suggestions. So what do you think is my best bet?

Thanks,

- uterpie

Gossamer Links 2.0
Thumbs up for this script.

There are many mods available for this script to make it SEO-friendly and what not.

Give it a try, you'll be pleased.

I'm helping reviewing on a Links 2.0 site and there's one thing I don't like. It is that you can't jump over sites that you're reviewing. Sometimes there's 10 sites in a row that are ok, but they're in the same category or categories that are already filled and I would like to keep them for tomorrows update. So it would be nice to be able to jump to sites 11-20 in the que.
The script is kinda confusing too, but that's probably just me :)

Best links list script I found for me, was the one I made..:) Never saw one that did everything I needed or wanted.

If you're willing to go to $200 X Power Links is a great script. Lots of features you don't think you need you will, like a built in bot to check links for recips and downtime. :) http://www.xpowerlinks.com

Thanks for the comments Joe and swedguy! The more I look at Hot Links SQL v3 the more I like it, can anyone comment on Hot Links?

MadMax, I'd like to see a demo of XPowerLinks, I've submitted the form on their site but nothing came of it. Do you know any sites that run on it I could check out?

Thanks!

Dan 2005-04-25 04:16 AM

we just bought www.pimplinks.com it runs xpowerlinks i have not used it yet ...
Still waiting on them to move the site ....

We use Links 2.0 on all our other link lists with a few mods its really good...
though its a little old now and needs a few mods to get it up their with the times but other wise its fine
Its best to go with a good script from the start once the site gets a few k of links in it ..its a big job to change scripts if the data base aint the same ..keep that in mind...good luck with it |thumb

I can only recommend custom made scripts; you pay a bit more but they will fullfill all your recommendments

MadMax 2005-04-25 05:40 PM

I run XPL at fetishphiles.com, Cohiba runs it at sultans-porn.com (I believe) and ioxxx.com (for sure), all-sex-links.com is the site owned by the programmers. You might want to re-request the demo access, and I'll see if I can dig up my old demo login info for you :)

Very helpful, thanks MadMax! I requested another XPowerLinks demo and got the user and pass, so I checked it out. It definitely looks good.

I can't meet your price point, uterpie, but I would be remiss if I didn't at least pop in to mention DragonList. Please see my sig for a demo. Based on your post, I think it may be more than you're looking for at the moment.

I know many people are very happy with XPowerLinks, as well.

Hi Mishi! |waves| It bums me out that I can't afford DragonList, you and Venturi are good peeps and you helped me a lot at that other place we hang. I'd love to give a little back. Everybody there and everywhere seems to really like your script!

Pervy 2005-04-29 12:50 AM

I run XPL on http://www.sexclearinghouse.com

I'm basically happy with it but am looking for something that can be used to run multiple sites and has some kind of import facility for all the Free Hosted Sites.

If you're not planning for growth, just use a free script.

Thanks for the kind words!

Once I get the next version released, I'm going to do a complete overhaul. Maybe I'll do a "lite" version if I get smart enough to figure out how. ;)

Oh, here's a start - what are the bare-minimum features you would want?

uterpie 2005-04-30 07:38 PM

I think the bare minimum features would be (in addition to manual reviewing and listing of links, of course):

- Static pages (not dynamic)
- Recip checker
- Duplicate checker
- Broken link checker
- Blacklist controls

Nothing too fancy. Many of the cheaper and even free scripts can do all this EXCEPT the first bullet. Ultimately THAT's what I'll be paying for. I don't really see much point in a Link List if its not SE friendly.

In researching I've seen a lot of sites that are built on feature-rich scripts but don't utilize most of the fancier user features the script offers (reviews, ratings, report broken link, added on [date], hits, etc). I assume they got the more advanced script for the admin functionality and NOT the user functionality... so if a developer is looking for one spot to trim fat the best bet would probably be to trim the fancier user functionality and leave as much admin as possible. Just my 2 cents.

I'll be taking all of this into consideration for the next version. Thanks a lot for the input.

uterpie 2005-05-19 06:21 PM

Hi all! |waves| Still haven't decided on a script, but I felt like I had it narrowed down between Hot Links SQL and XPowerLinks until I saw this FAQ for XPowerLinks:
http://faqs.xpowerlinks.com/article5-14.html

So it looks like XPowerLinks output is quasi-static. Wouldn't that put it on par with scripts with dynamic output like Warm Links or IndexU? I mean, how many degrees can there be between static and dynamic output?

Very confused,

- uterpie

Lemmy 2005-05-19 06:33 PM

I guess what it means is that the pages appear static to the SEs and that's all that matters. Not sure though. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can enlighten us.

MadMax 2005-05-19 06:53 PM

uterpie - XPL uses pages generated on the fly, but uses mod_rewrite to generate static-looking SE friendly URLs. Basically, when a URL is called, the script generates a php page...but because the script uses mod_rewrite to give the dynamically generated pages static URLs instead of yoursite.com/php?anal, the URL is yoursite.com/links/anal/ (for example), which is much friendlier for both search engines and surfers.

So, that's what the "quasi-static" means...the pages are dynamically generated but to the world (i.e. surfers and SE spiders) they look static. There are no pages to "build" in order to update...as soon as a link is added it displays on the front end. I run XPL at Fetish Philes and I'm getting pretty respectable SE traffic...this particular feature was one of the big reasons I chose this script.

Hope this helped. BTW, if you decide to go with XPL let me know before you buy, I can get you a $20 discount :)

uterpie 2005-05-20 01:15 PM

MadMax, thanks for explaining that so clearly! I understand it now. This is going to help me a lot. And thanks for the discount offer. You're awesome!
