The only rule that I see being broken as far as my rules goes is that the galleries are over 800 wide.

Do you mean my gallery1 and gallery2 pages add up to more than 800 pixels wide?

How would I fix that with out screwing everything up?

Shrink the size of the thumbs or put 4 instead of 5 beside each other.

ok made the thumbs smaller but not I think they may to grainy???

You didn't resize the thumb, just forced it to display smaller with the height and witdh properties of the img tag. I don't know if this method actually makes them look worse, but I'm sure it doesn't help.

I suggest you make new thumbs from scratch. I downloaded one and it doesn't look to good. At 139 x 200 pixels and more than 20kb it's also pretty huge as far as thumbnails go.

I actually did resize the thumbs in photoshop and then changed the size attributes.

I think I may have forgot to upload the newly sized thumbs though....not sure.....have a look now please if you will.

The display size matches the actual size, but all your thumbs are still 20+ kb. The whole page weighs in at 236 kb and it will take quite some time to load fully for someone on dialup. Ideally I think thumbs should be around 5 kb.

The big pictures look to be over-compressed, little blurry/grainy. Or it's my eyes this am. I agree, thumbs should be around 5k each. Not only would the bigger file size thumbs take longer to download, but also using too much un-necessary bandwidth..:)

Having problems getting thumbs in the 5K range
 

I decided to start over making my thumbs as suggested. and ofcourse I'm running into problems...

You guys are saying thumbs should be around 5k. Mine are still coming out at around 17k or so.

Here is what I am doing:

1> Open full size image in photoshop
2> Select fixed aspect ratio of 100x150
3> Select the part of the image I want
4> Crop it.
5> Then select image, resize it to 100x150. (But it won't let me put 100x150 unless I uncheck constrain proportions and I don't know if thats what I should be doing or not?)
6> Then I save it as thumbwhatever.jpg.
Options then come up I choose baseline optimized with medium quality 5.

And then checking the thumb file size its never less that 15 k.

Obviously I'm missing a step or doing something wrong.

How to make a thumbnail in Photoshop and make it look good the easy way:

1. DON'T USE THE RECTANGULAR MARQUEE TOOL!
2. Use the cropping tool
3. Set the exact pixel dimension you want for width & height. Make sure resolution is set to 72 px/inch.
4. Crop the picture. Voila! No need to resize, PS takes care of it all.
5. Sharpen if needed.
6. Save for web (alt + shift + ctrl + s). Tweak the quality slider until you have a good balance between size and quality, something around 50% should be good.

one question though,

When setting "exact pixel dimension you want for width & height"

how do I choose pixels? The default seems to be in inches

Just type in "px" in the boxes instead of "in" or whatever it says.

Ok I think I have the thumbs right! Hopefully...take a look now and let me know what you think.
