Question about PR transfer and SE benefit transfer

Here's 2 quick scenarios, let me know what you guys think.....

Scenario 1)
I have a PR5 page on domain xyz.com that has 100 links to other internal pages on domain xyz.com, and additionally I have 1 outgoing link to abc.com

Scenario 2)
I have another PR5 page on domain xyz.com that has 100 links going to pages OUTSIDE of domain xyz.com, 0 links to other pages in domain xyz.com, and I also have an additional outgoing link to abc.com

All other things held constant (including the assumption that page relevancy is the same), would there be greater PR transfer and SE benefit going to abc.com in Scenario 1 or Scenario 2 - or would both scenarios yield equal benefits to abc.com?

Tough to say, especially when you throw the term "SE benefit" in there.

For straight PR, they may be equivalent (this is assuming a 'pure scenario', where either none of the "100 pages" links back or all link back.). This is based on the idea that google looks at pages, not sites, unless the site has gotten weighted as a hub. I think if you actually did the experiement the apparent PR transfer would be the same.

For relevancy, I would say scenario 1 would be preferable, as the originating site in 1 would look more like a hub. But that's just my opinion.

With SE, you pays your money and you takes your chances.

Bill - agreed - however the important concept here is that the PR5 could be a PR5.99 or 5.01 and its on a logarithmic scale (unknown base) but for relevancy the white paper over at Google assumes the same transfer whether to an outside page or an inside page.

Of course- my biggest question has got to be, how do you know its PR5? I dont know of any reliable method at the present to tell the real PR of a page. Also, the quality, and secondly the quantity of the links going to a page have 100s of times more effect on the recipient pages placing in SERPs which I would assume is most important to you? The only thing I can tell a higher PR does for you right now is get you botted more frequently, and get used as the basis for reciprical link request decisions by those who don't know what they are doing

I was gonna mention that part- the question of, as i think of it, is it a "strong 5" or a "weak 5", the logarithmic scale you describe. That's hard to quantify, as I'm sure you know. I think I can see it's effects, and when I see a "weak 4", for instance, I try to reinforce it to keep it stable.

In the case mentioned, a "weak 5" might only transfer a 3pr, while a "strong 5" might transfer a full 4pr.

But I don't know any way to quantify it for certain.

Based solely on my personal observations, I would say that if, in scenario 1, the 100 pages were extensively interlinked and all had links back to the index page, that domain 1 would pass on more "relevancy" or "SE benefit". (What I think of as the "big site" benefit, which kinda goes against the principle the google looks at pages, not sites, but I think I've seen the "big site" benefit in action.)

But, it's easy to set up complex theoretical problems, in practice, you are almost never going to find a "pure scenario".

That and within a site, usually just due to natural linking, the first dir level will be root -1 PR, root/dir/dir will be PR-2 etc. Ive seen this effect without natural linking but there are so many other factors that play in it - outside links coming in to internal pages etc. that it gets to the point that the analysis isn't worth the waste of time that could be spent building another page LOL

Not to mention Googles "assumed" PR that it gives inside pages for about the first few months till the algo kicks in with real backlinks and PR

Thanks to Kush, I am officially out of the giving SE advice info for less that 150/hr.

hmmm

150/hour seems about right...

so this is worth say $25...

scenario 1 will be better for the one outbound link... given a certain amount of recip ranking and only one out will give more to the one out.
scenario 2 the outbounds share the PR outbound with no recip it is limited...
