Toplists

Hi.
I don't know much about toplists, so I have a coupla questions:

When you go to submit a freesite to a toplist, you are asked to pick a username or some sort of designation. What's the purpose of that?
Do you pick a different one every time you submit, or can you use the same one every time?

I want to submit a tgp gallery and send the excess traffic to the toplists. Is there any special kind of link to use for this, or should I just put the toplist's recip at the bottom of the gallery? How does everybody go about it?

Thanks

A toplist is just a list, the more traffic you send the higher up you should rank. How you rank depends on what you send compared to the other sites. You have to send traffic to stay on the list. They ask you to pick a username/pass so you have your own account, and have stats, like how much you've sent, how much was sent to you, ect. Thats how most work anyways. Yes, you can only have one site per account, have to get another account to add another site. And yes they give you a special link, have to to, so you get credit for the hits you send.

Where you put the toplist link on your site is of course up to you, the more visible you make it, the more you should send to the toplist, then again, less clicks for your ads. It's kinda of a catch 22. Most people use them as a last resort, like on exit consoles, as they know the surfer is leaving without buying anyways. Course you cant do that on a free site or tgp.

Hope that helps or has'nt confused you more...:)

Many toplists will not accept link list style free sites.

ronnie and Toby,
hmmmmmm - I might have to re-think my strategy. I may just send the tgp traffic to a niche-specific hub.
Thanks!

Chuckiepoo a hub would probably be a better use of ypour immediate bleed traffic. Then try maybe some links to toplists off the exit console on your hub.

I run a bunch of toplists and personally I accept mostly free sites. I feel it keeps my quality up better than a toplist of links to yet more links which is better for me and submitters.

All toplist scripts are not created equal. Some utilize the user name as the identifier in the code they give you. Others will generate a numerical identifier to use in the code you are given. Sometimes it`s good to know beforehand so you can preserve your method of using or recording usernames and passwords.

Toplists can be a great way to recycle traffic and make the traffic you do have keep generating more for longer periods of time.

Thanks, Robbo! Very informative. I'll try that!

It depends on the type of toplist and it's main theme, but many will only list full blown sites. I even have trouble getting Bevy Of Babes listed on some of them and I have dozens of galleries on that site.
