GG - what did I screw up?

Hi Greenguy,

I submitted this site to link-o-rama on the 26th, but I don't think it got listed.

Any chance you could take a look at it and give me an idea what I balled up this time?

TIA

Rob.

IMHO, first off the return links are mostly aligned left instead of middle.

You go all over the place in different directories for the site, but that maybe is just my pet peeve.

Hi Alex,

thanks for the quick reply! Good point about the left aligned - I didn't notice that! Maybe something in the style sheet is buggering them up - will check into it. As for the directories, hehe, just been reading your comments on that in another thread.

I've tried to follow the advice I was given when I first posted here, about putting index files in directories and linking to images, rather than using index1, index2 etc. I also toyed with the idea of duplicating the main page and gallery html files for each folder, but then it struck me that I'd end up with several duplicate pages - and we know Google doesn't like them :( - so I figured it was better to link to one main page from the individual directories. Now it turns out some folks don't like that either - there's more to this freesite builing than meets the eye isn't there? :D

Rob, for me (and my limited SEO skills) I am finding that your just jumping all over the place. Not a single page in this site is in the same folder, your index pages are over THERE, your main pages over HERE, and the gallery pages SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I can't picture a bot thinking that this is a normal website.

Think like a bot. :)

Who's bot? SEs or LLs? I think you mean SE bots?

Linkster 2005-06-30 07:52 AM

If I had to take a guess it would be that the full size pics look like shit - they're way over compressed and pixellated

And I do think Alex is talking about SE bots - which really wouldnt affect getting listed on the LLs - just suggestions Im sure :)

That was probably why we declined it.

Rob, that was friendly advise, not why you did or didn't get listed. I am seeing a few people here using the same sort of software and page structure, and I just can't picture googlebot or others being very impressed.

Maybe it's just me.

Linkster - thanks for pointing out the pic quality. I'll have to rework that a little. The originals are HUGE, way over 300K, and that's obviously not cool for many LLs.

GG - if I sort out the alignments will it be ok to resubmit?

Alex - all comments are always appreciated! I'm very much a newbie at this, and I'm trying to learn as I go. My SEO skills are also limited, but I have noticed that Google, MSN et al have been crawling all over the two freesites on that domain since I submitted them. At least one of them (I haven't looked for the second one) is listed on Google. Admittedly it's under some pretty obscure terms (the name of the sponsor, mostly), but it did get listed, so I'm guessing that the structure of the site isn't a bar to getting listed per se. Of course, there's a huge difference between getting listed and getting a good listing, but I guess that's down to my poor SEO skills. That said, I suppose structure and SEO go hand in hand, so maybe a little optimising would help there too.

Thanks again for your comments guys, it's much appreciated.

Resubmit away :)

RobUK 2005-06-30 09:44 PM

Thanks GG - have fixed the alignment on that link and its sister site. Will resubmit in the next few days.

Rob.
