War of the Worlds.

Ok just saw it with the wife and it was good. It was nice to see they did not make TC out to be some super hero. But i have one question that maybe someone who saw the old one might be able to clear up for me. I never saw the old one and dont even know if this part is in the old one.
Not to give anything away, but what the fuck did the Birds have to do with anything?

cd34 2005-06-30 02:31 AM

its a reference to the book if I recall -- something like: one notices the birds have shadows these days. Also, when all electronic devices stopped when the tripods were around, the birds were quiet. I don't recall if this is in the 1953 movie -- I'll have to watch it in the next few days and let you know.

I also have Jeff Wayne's musical version of it which does make mention of birds -- but, its been a while since I've listened to it. I do believe there is mention again of the birds casting shadows and the fact that the birds were silent.

The book also had the birds eating the martians after they had died. I don't recall if the movie or musical referenced that.

I know in the original recording from Orson Wells broadcast made mention of it, but, its been 20+ years since I've heard it.

I don't think there is anything secretive to it -- merely an observation to make the listener/viewer aware of the little things.

I've been waiting for thiiiiiisssss... yeeeyyyy...
/me goes calling the cinema see when it's on

cd34, I'm gonna ignore you letting me know the martians died. It's like when I went to see the gladiator, I met a friend on my way to cinema, so we stoped our cars window to window to chit-chat for 2 minutes. When we're done and about to leave, he asks "hey, where ya going btw?", so I'm like "to see the gladiator". He replies "ahhh, just saw it yesterday. great movie. I don't wanna spoil ur fun so I won't tell you anything about it... well maybe just 1 little thing: he dies at the end". Lucky for him, he left with his engine screaming, while I was opening the car's door...

cd34 2005-06-30 03:18 AM

sorry about that, I didn't know that was a spoiler. The movie is only 52 years old -- the radio show a tad under 70 if I recall. :) There are very few original movies anymore -- just remakes.

Just watched Gladiator again this evening. Great movie.

JohnnyR 2005-06-30 03:22 AM

Nah wasn't a spoiler cd34 man, I was just fooling around. I wholeheartedly agree about they don't making original movies anymore. But that wouldn't be a problem, remakes. The real problem is that remakes usually suck big time, and they're actually worse then the few decades old original movie.

waiting for this film coming to the movies here :)

Certifiedbitch 2005-06-30 06:36 AM

i'm having a second thought about the movie but might see it on the weekend.

Torn Rose 2005-06-30 08:24 AM

The book was written in 1898 so it's kind of hard to "spoil" the ending. |ufo|

My parents used to talk about this... a lot. They had just walked home from a church my father pastored on a back woods rez in Eastern Oregon. He said some guy on horseback came riding by and told them the martians had invaded and get to cover.

|pokefun| My dad said that he was hoping for it so he could be a missionary to Mars.

that was some good |potleaf| he was smokin'.

The birds let Tom Cruise know and tell the soldiers that thing's SHEILDS were not working so they could shoot at it and take it down.

I saw it last night. Good Movie, I liked it.

sue-fl 2005-06-30 10:09 AM

I can't wait to see the movie either. I don't think anything could compare to the original one but we'll see....

Yes but he saw the movie and wanted to know what the birds meant. He was confused.

People who haven't seen the movie shouldn't be reading this thread. LOL

plateman 2005-06-30 11:37 AM

yeah I am way behind on watching movies hard to do as we been away most every weekend and through the week...

juggernaut 2005-06-30 01:16 PM

Ramster thank you so much. Me and the wife just got it after we read that. Allot things fell right into place. Thanks man.

the_dawn 2005-07-01 06:23 AM

I'm still planning to watch it maybe next week. Maybe I won't be that busy at that time...

slymer 2005-07-04 07:12 AM

haven't watched the movie. i have no problem with remakes. wait till you see the trailer of "King Kong."

danbrusca 2005-07-04 04:12 PM

I saw that trailer before War Of The Worlds yesterday and was distinctly unimpressed. The CGI looks decidely ropey...

HarD_RocK 2005-07-05 05:21 AM

I heard some feedback that the special effects were really good. Was it? I haven't seen the movie yet.

speed57 2005-07-06 12:29 AM

have not seen it yet but I'm planning to wathc it this weekend when there's less people in the cinema.

Vivaldi 2005-07-06 05:21 AM

Got to tell this, after reading the book & watching the movie You realize what a genius Spielberg really is ... so it's a must movie for everybody |thumb

That's right! Took me a minute to figure out that was what was going on. I really liked this movie. I heard the reviews were poor, can't say as I understand why. Maybe leaving the viewer with something to think about for a second rather than a martian blowing snotuals all over the place would have made some people happier, but I am ok without that |thumb

btw, the special effects were great, the sound was awesome, movie had me on the edge of my seat most of the time. And it was spooky also! I think I'll be creeped out by that sound for a long time. |shocking|

terry 2005-07-06 08:47 AM

I went to see War of the Worlds last night and man was it good. I squirmed in my seat a couple of times.. very well done. You cant fuck with Earth .. we've got Tom Cruise and grenades! I'll buy the DVD.

jones 2005-07-06 10:48 PM

well we have different views on that movie. some might say the movie sucked because of Tom's publicity stunt issues, but for me that is still another steven spielberg hit.

speed57 2005-07-07 01:28 AM

VFX they say was mind blowing.
