So I bought this microsoft finger print password reader

And it is the coolest thing I have ever used. Anything that asks for a logon and password and be put in this thing so all I have to do is touch it and I am logged in. :)

MadMax 2005-07-03 10:52 AM

That's nice...I was wondering how cool that would actually be :)

Jim 2005-07-03 10:53 AM

Really simple...
Someone asked me what happens if it breaks. If it does, you just go back to filling in the logon and password by hand. And, it's only $50.

Useless 2005-07-03 11:15 AM

My wife has something like that, but you have to guess the spot that you need to touch. Once you find it, you're in. ;)

Jim 2005-07-03 12:22 PM

So far so good with this one. I have it set up for all my fingers. So anyone of them will work.

Robbo 2005-07-03 03:22 PM

I picked up one of those wireless usb locks foer my computer a while back. It locks down when I walk away and is up and running by the time I sit at my keyboard. No password capability except for logging on to windows but it keeps prying eyes off of my stuff pretty nicely. I never have to worry about my kids accidently seeing anything. A great $20 investment!

Biometrics scare me and I can`t feel good helping thier evolution. Can you say Gattica?

Cleo 2005-07-03 04:35 PM

Now someone is going to cut of your finger so that they can access your stuff.

On my Mac once I login to the computer with my master admin password all my other passwords are unlocked, no finger needed. I can then lock the account with one click or have it set to lock after any amount of time.

I hope not...my safe is the same way. No matter what I did, I could not keep my son out of my Sentry safe. So I bought a finger print reading Brinks safe. No breaking into that.

Cleo 2005-07-03 05:48 PM

They have a finger reader at the tanning solon that I go to once in awhile. It always seems like it doesn't read my finger if I don't go for a few months. I asked them once what they would do with someone with no fingers and they said that they would have to use their nose. lol

I see that there is software now that lets you use an iPod as a key like you do with the usb things.

cd34 2005-07-03 06:25 PM

ballistic gelatin has many uses if you can obtain a relief of someone's fingerprint.

the_dawn 2005-07-04 03:29 AM

Cool stuff? How much does it cost anyway?

Alphawolf 2005-07-04 09:36 AM

Does it save password and usernames somewhere? Meaning, if you had to reinstall the OS, could you restore all your login info?

I've used RoboForm for a while now and it's the bomb. It would be nice to have the fingerprint built into a laptop though.

You know MS is collecting your shit to plot evil against you, right? :D

I'm surprised Cleo didn't tell you.

Really? You have kept so quiet about your advantage, I'd hardly know what it was. ;)

Cleo 2005-07-04 10:43 AM

They have fingerprint readers for the Mac too so I really didn't see this as a Mac versus PC thing or anything like that. I just don't see why having something on your laptop that enters your passwords for you by having to rub a finger is any better then having an app on your drive that you enter your master password in once per login is better. It seems like more of a hassle to me actually.

You asked what happens in you move to another computer. Not sure about the finger reader thing but my laptop users a ling called keychain and it stores its database in ~/Library/keychains/keychainname so it moves with your home directory.

I do think that Macs have an advantage now that they are *nix based. Right now I've got Imageready processing files. Rsync creating a mirror of FoxyAngel to a local disk image, and a ton of other crap going on.

It's been many years since I've had to restart due to a crash or something like that. Macs just work. :D

Hmm, I have a password finger print, umm...okay no I don't, but I write my passwords down on my hand...does that count?

It saves them locally :)

Cleo 2005-07-04 12:40 PM

So you can just plug the fingerprint thing into any computer and it autofill your passwords on that machine too?

Does it work with all your apps or just IE?
