PhD Research - Adult industry influence on technology
 

Dear GG&J,

I am currently researching how the adult industry might have influenced the development of various internet technologies. Notably, Sponsorship / affiliate programs, Payment systems, Advertising. My research focuses on the history of their development, why the adult industry adopted them and how the needs of the 'Adult' community helped shape their development.

If anyone has any general comments I'd be very interested to hear them? I am also looking for a few people to interview, this can be done anonymously or with reference to your name/sites.

About me - I worked for a web-design company 1997-2004 that worked with adult & mainstream customers. Some of you might know me from 1997ish - but since then I’ve been more involved in research / academic studies.[b]

Well one place you might want to look is video broadcasting. In the past I was asked to set up a video conferencing system for internal use. I can tell you not much was around back then. But it was the Adult industry that spearheaded that technology. If not for them I would say that video across the internet would not be what it is today. Not many people want to watch something on the internet like TV, they want something differant, IE see someone and talk to them live. The adult industry knew this would be a big $$$$ maker once that software got working and everyone had enough pipe to view live streams so I'm sure they paid programmers to work that.
