I'm having breakfast this morning and my daughter calls down to me. No idea what it is she's saying, so I walk in the direction of the calling and come to the bottom of the stairs. Now I'd left my laptop on the landing last night and forgotten about it. The drop is I'd guess about 25 feet from floor to landing. Morgan is holding it over the railings and saying, "Dad, can I play games?".

Well, you can guess the rest! lol

Worse thing that I ever did was slam the rear hatch of my Vette on my old Mac laptop. It killed it, crushed the screen and stuff. It was an old slow model it wasn't a big deal but I did go without a laptop for a few years and just had a tower then. Now I could never be stuck at home with a tower and only use a laptop, how times have changed.

Yeah my Powerbook would cost 3K to replace. When I was shooting Angel with Alex the dwarf we all took a break by the pool and all or a sudden Alex comes running out holding my laptop open and almost ends up in the pool. Seeing a 3 foot man running with a 17 inch wide screen laptop is actually pretty funny to watch except for the fact that it was my laptop. :D

Totally trashed but luckily I have backup copies.

"Hereeeeeees, Jonny!!"

"Darling. Light, of my life. I'm not gonna hurt ya. You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said, I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the fuck in. Ha, ha. "

lines from the movie, not what I said to Morgan (may have THOUGHT it)

:)

No offense to the little dude, but seeing a wee man do anything is pretty fucking funny!

:)

This is exactly why I have insurance on every thing that cost more then $500 for replacement cost.

The only reason I'm still smiling. :)

Useless 2005-07-18 05:27 PM

And then you file a claim and find out that your deductible is $1,000 ;)

Who hasn't dropped a laptop down steps, lol. Mine was the first laptop I got...was dating this very fine woman, but she had a psychotic cat that would always jump on my back when I was going down the steps. Stupid cat would lay in ambush for me...I never did see him before the actual jumping took place. Me, laptop, cat jumping on my back, clawed my neck, dropped laptop, fell down steps. Cat didn't fall down the steps, but was at the top of the steps looking at me like, "You're my bitch"

Cleo 2005-07-18 06:12 PM

My rich neighbor's cat knocked a glass of water into his one month old 17" Powerbook while everyone was asleep. Guess it sat there frying all night because black slug was being spit out by the fan all over the counter until it too died. It was a total loss, he was pretty upset, I drove him to the Apple store so that he could buy another the next day. I'm guessing he lost almost a whole day's income from one of his wells.

I dropped mine off our loft wall about 20 or so feet and just smashed the screen to hell. I was able to pick up a new one on ebay for like 150 bucks. From dell it was 300. From the looks of it I would bet the drive is still ok, you would be surprised how much a laptop drive and take in the lines of abuse. Go to a computer store and purchase an external case. Bring the drive in and show them. Most cases can be hooked up via usb and you can retreive all the data for around 30 bucks. But man that totally sucks, looks like a truck ran it over.

I'll give that a try. I'm no good with hardware or I'd consider doing something on my own. Gives me an excuse to escape this little backwater hole for a day at least. :)

Rocco 2005-07-19 09:14 AM

holy shite, hope you didn't loos any important data on that laptop

Its not as hard as you might think. Some people can build normal computers but when it comes to a laptop they freak out. Its all the same stuff just smaller. I often wonder why the hell desktops are so big. I mean if you can get a 200 gig drive to be the size of a pack of smokes why in the hell would you make one the size of an address book? But either way, all you have to do is look over the laptop, you will find the screws that need to come out (place them in a bag they are very small) and 99% of everything in a laptop is connected via wires and plugs that you can not place in any other slot at all. Unless you forced it but then that would break it again lol. Anyway good luck with it. I must tell you that if the laptop is from compaq dont bother trying to take it apart they have some kind of special screw driver and head on the screws. Typical compaq bullshit.

Thanks for the advice, dude. I was just going to toss it until I read your post yesterday, but we've arranged to put a day aside next week to visit the nearest town. The only thing I want off it are actually some story ideas that I never got round to copying. Of course, you know what this means, April will turn it into a shopping trip. lol |dizzy|
