Let's Discuss Title Length

Go ahead - talk amongst yourselves. |waves|

To me, a free site's title should be 3-4 words. If you surf the major link lists you'll see that is a standard rule of thumb. But lately I'm seeing titles that are 6 and 7 words long. Big deal, you say. Well, it is a big deal, because those of you writing these long titles are pretty much repeating them as the description. You've spent all of your energy on a very descriptive title, now there's nothing left to say. You're losing the whole point of a title - it's not supposed to say everything. If some of you were writers, there wouldn't be any point in reading your books. Your titles would have been the entire story.

Furthermore - Capitalize the first letter of each word in the title. My Whore Wife, not My whore wife.

We may have to have an extensive series of posts just discussing my pet peeves. Trust me, I've got lots of 'em. :D

I limit mine by length - basically I want to make sure I don't blow the format of my list out the window, so I give (I think it is) 40 characters. If you want to call the site "sex pussy girl lick deep" and that is what is actually on the site as it's title, and it matches the action on the site, well, more power to you.

However, I routinely delete submissions where the title sent to me doesn't match the title on the site, or where the title on the site doesn't match the content. Yesterday I deleted a site called "blonde fucks toy" because in 3 galleries, there was a sex toyin exactly 2 pictures, and neither of them featured any sort of penetration.

Oh yeah, I also tend to delete sites where people try to get a celeb name into the title. Calling a model "Paris" or worse, someone submitted to me the other day "Paris and Nicole" into the lesbian section... anyway, if I catch it as BS, it's toast.

I've been pretty lax up to this point. I have been pondering using a 40 character description because I spend wayyyyy too much time fixing them. Not that they aren't accurate but they use the entire submit form to repeat unnecessary words. |angry|

My limit is 3-4 words, I sometimes let 5 slide, but they'd better not be long words. It fucks up the page formatting in my categories, and that pisses me off more than it probably should.

I have no hard set rule, but 3-5 seems to be the norm - of course, if you site was titled "Supercalafragalisticexpladocious Teen Bonnie" then I might reject it :D

plateman 2005-07-29 01:33 PM

3-5 and I hate titles or descriptions that the webmaster trys and BS or talk to the sufer - I useally reject for that and its ok for a description to drop under the first line...

I think 3-5 is more than enough for a title

What's wrong with long titles? If they are done properly they can bring in a whole bunch of search engine traffic ;) I've had really good luck with 5-7 words on search engine sites. With the few link list sites I build I stay 3-4 because I figured the longer titles would be declined at most places.

I think 3 words is the best option, but up to five is OK too. However I've cought myslef naming sites with just 2 words lately.. i think i'm burning out..
Yep, and I also hate such stuff
"Come and see my wife showing off tits just for you"

Why? Donīt you like Supercalafragalisticexpladocious Teen Bonnies? |cool|

Short descriptive titles make better clicks, donīt they?

Cleo 2005-07-30 08:22 AM

I personally prefer longer titles

I have mine set for 45 characters.

Not really a good example as I'm really not awake as of yet to be trying to write anything.

OK, here's a real example in my one of my queues right now.
Title: Sexy Chick And HQ Closeups Of Her Pretty Pussy
Description: Gorgeous girl gives you close-ups of her pretty pussy, ass, breasts and riding cock full-screen.

Crapola.

EDIT--
Doh! Blacklisted - not for the shitty title. You scroll down the index and the enter link says "ENTER FREE DOGFART GALLERIES" (what the ???), click it and you get http://www.teenmoviezone.com/ (and an attempted pop-up).

If I see the title repeated in the description I just hit delete without looking at the site.

Since going partner only I really don't have a lot of problems anymore.

That and the wonderful drop down menu in my admin.

that's too funny! thanks for the best laugh I've had all week lol

on a serious note, I've fallen into the habit of using 2-3 word title, because a couple of LLs I submit to have a 3 word limit & I'd hate to drop them. (and I'm too lazy to make a separate index just for that :D )
as for descr - I try to make a nice long one that can get cut off at about 50 & 70 characters. This seems to be about right for those LLs that like shorter ones, I don't have to edit my titles on the site, and if they take the long one, great!

I hope that this is ok, the only problem I can see is that if I have a longer descr on the actual page than what I submit.
