Starting a link list questions

Ok, on to a new venture. I was building free sites for a while and finally got an idea of what to do and what not to do. So now I’m going to start up my own link list. What should I watch out for or be aware of while starting this endeavor?

Now it might seem obvious but it’s not. For instance, Greenguy suggested to Jim when he opened Javes that he should browse current link lists and grab some free sites to put up on his link list even without recips so that surfers have something to look at while your own list of submitters grows. On the other hand, some newbie just got reprimanded for copying descriptions from penisbot (if I remember correctly) for his new link list. Yet when I was submitting free-sites I used the same description to all the link lists I submitted to, so wouldn’t a new site be bound to have links with descriptions that match existing sites. Now I can understand if one copied every single link off of a link list that would be bad form, but is there more etiquette to be aware of?

How important is search engine traffic? I know in my free-sites, even though I could pop up as high as the third link in google with a rather well known brand name, it was rare that people actually clicked through. I know link-lists are a different beast, but is the majority of inbound traffic coming from search engines?

Now I’ve read a lot about how dynamic pages are bad for search engine placement for link lists, but I’ve also read some SEO articles for non-adult sites claiming that google would not ignore php built pages and can spider them – maybe more slowly. So how much does a php driven site really lack when it comes to popular search engine placement?

Any other things to be aware of?

Sorry about the length of the post and thanks in advance...

I don't thingk copying a whole link directory including description from one site to your own site is a smart thing to do. I think their isn't copyright on links (http://www things) but on their names (which are short descriptions) and descriptions their is indeed copyright.

Most LL owners don't object to you grabbing some of their links. What they do object to is using "their" descriptions. If you can't at least do your own descriptions then this is not something you should be venturing into.

Right, I was building free-sites so descriptions aren't really a problem, all I meant was my free-site had the same description at wetplace as it would have at sleek's slickest -- just random examples -- because that's the description I would have submitted to both.

So the normal procedure when starting a free site is to grab some free sites listed at other places but write your own descriptions. Got it.

But what about other aspects of starting a link-list? Generating traffic, SEO & PHP, banners versus FHG sales, etc?

Regarding descriptions: Like surfn said, if it's the LL's description, leave it alone. But if it actually appears on the freesite I wouldn't have any problem using it (if it was any good).

Regarding SE traffic: It's the best kind there is, people who actually type into their search bar what you have and they want. Without SE traffic I wouldn't have much.

Regarding php/static pages: Most LL scripts worth their money have an option to make php pages appear static to the spiders.

Yo Preacher, you are gonna like this link: http://www.fetishphiles.net/freesites.shtml

Mad Max has a list here of No Recip Free sites built by webmasters here at GG & Jim's!
You can use these for your new LL!

You can always fill your LL up with some hosted freesites (like 20-30% of your total link count).
Chop has a really cool site that can get you started: http://www.hfslinks.com
