How much you pay for custom PHP work?

Hello guys,

I've been working as a freelance PHP developer for a while and I found that things are not working the way I imagined.

I really want to improve my results, but the first thing that I want to know is how much people are usually paying for custom PHP code work?

Thank you all,
Andrew

I have never paid by the hour but had quotes on projects. Price range 25 - 300 USD.

I've only done a few PHP work but since I freelance I don't set my own prices and I don't have an hourly rate. I don't ask for payment unless my client is satisfied with the work. Basically, after I'm done I just ask my client to send me whatever amount he/she feels comfortable paying. I'd say I've gotten from 20 ~ 100 bucks to fix something or add whatever features.

About the same from what I've seen.. $20 - $200 for different projects.

I was actually wondering about bigger projects. Projects that require at least a month of code work. Let's say at least 150 hours.

I found over the years that working for clients is seldom worth the trouble. After agreeing a price most want other stuff done for free on the grounds that "it was obvious I needed that".

So you either specify it all ( which they don't want to pay you to do ) or they specify it all ( which they don't know how to do ).

I do a few small jobs now and then for friends gratis ( they owe me a favour ), and some scripts for my own use that I later release as freeware if they are generally useful, but that's it. I find people expect programmers to work for nothing as "software should be free". Try getting a model and photographer to do you a shoot for free....

Maybe better spend your time writing packages scripts that have a general use, but even so they don't sell for more than a few $, so you need to hit on something that a lot of people need and are willing to pay for, or code up your own projects and websites and use your skills that way.

I have a full time PHP programmer on staff. Makes it much easier when they are nearby and need a beating!

If you look at the freelancer bid for jobs type sites most seem to be charging $10-15/hr with those in the US charging $30-45/hr. I think if you want to get paid what youre worth then you should really look in to those types of sites because they tend to draw a more mainstream crowd that understand that coders need to eat too ;). It's still really competitive but if you build up a reputation I'm sure you could be making a decent living after a while. Another thing you could be doing, like someone else said, is writing scripts that a lot of people will want. TGP/LL/Traffic trading scripts etc. It's a competetive market but there's plenty of room for improvement.

Well I dont know if this helps but I bought this script from this guy
http://www.scriptmagix.com/index.php...a6b38c7fa203af

And had him completly change it to my site i have now
www.camhostlist.com

I dont know how much of it he had to change in the code but there were about 10 things I wanted changed and in the end it really is a differant script then what he is offering for sale
I paid $40 for the script and then $75.00 to change it. I felt as tho he has done so much work just on the tweeking end that I'm sending him another $100 today cause i just felt he undercut his price and really did not know how much work was going to be involved. Took him about 1 week to get the base set, then it was tweeking and that was about 1 more week.
