Anybody been to GalleryCollector.com ? Going through my stats, I noticed that one of my free site pages was listed there. It advertises "Welcome to The Gallery Collector.
SURFERS, MAKE YOUR OWN GALLERIES!" I am not sure what to make of it. It does link to my gallery page, ads and all, but avoids the main and index pages where sales tend to be made.

Well it looks like maybe they are hot linking your images to use in hobbyist groups like yahoo, notice the little plug in the header, "great for yahoo groups" (Oh Boy!) Besides it clearly says "gallery collector. com eats thumbs and galleries".

Check out the demo at the site, am I wrong?

Block parasites?

It's better to have a white list with .htaccess than a black list.

Just block everything and allow the referrers you specify. If you get a large blacklist of say 20, then that's 20 things the server has to think about every time it serves an image.

This stops Fusker but DOES NOT work for GalleryCollector. Yikes! It created thumbs from the gallery pics and asked me which one to choose to represent the gallery.

Has anyone had a chance to go to the site and look?

wrt to GalleryCollector, this is my website.
I'm puzzled by the negative reaction I'm seeing here as I had assumed it was 100% advantage to the webmaster, so maybe there's a misunderstanding on my part?

Let me explain exactly what it does.

I surfer sees a gallery that he likes enough to want to "bookmark" it. He can always add it to "My favorites" in IE, but GalleryCollector gives him the option to do something better.
On clicking "collect", there is a one time "hotlink" to the thumbs only.He selects one thumb, which gets resized and copied to the server. That's it. The thumbs are not hotlinked after that, and the large images are NEVER hotlinked. I don't think you need to go rushing for the .htaccess ;-).

The surfer collects galleries he likes and then goes to post them on boards and yahoo groups. There is no hotlinking involved at this stage or any point after. To see your gallery or large images the surfer must always return to your gallery, which of course has your ads, ref codes etc. Any sales you get go to you.

I'd say that's pure advantage to any webmaster, but I may be missing something.

A lot of webmasters run yahoo groups and boards, and spam their own galleries onto them. When links to my galleries end up on boards or yahoo groups I'm pretty happy about it.

A showed this to a few webmasters and they all thought it was cool and have started to use it to make their own pages with their own galleries and spam them to yahoo and msn.

To reply to the first poster, he objects that it doesn't link back to his home page? Well I always put a link on my galleries back to my home page, so I'm assuming he has a reason not to? I don't know.

Finally I have written a webmaster program that would allow anyone to create these types of pages with their own, or sponsor hosted galleries and include a banner at the top back to their own site. I just haven't released this yet.

If you can, please take a moment to look at the site and understand exactly what it does, and think about the advantages and any disadvantages.

I'm not out to piss anyone off here, and I'd welcome any feedback. If you think it's a "bad thing" please let me know why.

Looks pretty cool man, I can't see any problems with it. Some guys may take offense to not being consulted before their galleries are used on your site, be it by your surfers or not, but I would think it a rush to judgement to think its a bad deal, unless Im missing something ?

I for sure don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers here. It's a bit hard to predict where surfers might take a shine to a gallery so asking eveyone's permission isn't practical.

I know that yahoo and google do a similar thing, cept they try to hotlink your big pics, and I don't do that.

Nearest equivalent is askjolene who spider sites and take thumbs to represent galleries. I never have a problem with it as the more exposure I get for free the happier I am.

If anyone does have an issue with getting this free traffic to their galleries, please pm me and I'll put their websites on a stop list. I will also add a contact link for webmasters who can tell me they don't want this for their galleries. Again, I can't see why not, but I respect all wishes.
