What is it about Natalie Holloway?

OK, it is a tragedy to have anyone missing and this young lady had much of her life in front of her.

What's the deal with all the news coverage? I mean teenagers go missing all the time and are often the victims of terrible crimes but why aren't others so news worthy? Is it because she's a cute blonde teenager? is it because her parents could aford to send her to Aruba?

Why doea America care more about this young lady then so many far more tragic situations?

justb 2005-10-13 02:34 PM

I think it's because her Mom is beating the pavement keeping the story going.

white good looking girl with a bible thumping mother.... what else is there?

spookyx 2005-10-13 03:27 PM

If it were my daughter I would have just kept quite and then had the suspects killed later on.

I think the media uses it when they run out of real news anymore. This has been going on for months. Factor in an earthquake or a few hurricanes and you don't hear anything about her or Aruba. Once that is no longer interesting to their viewers they bore use with the same stories we have heard a hundred times on the "breaking news" in Aruba.

Agent 2005-10-13 03:40 PM

I saw her mother on Dr. Phil. On the same show he called for a boycott of Aruba by Americans. I thought that was redicilous. Then again, I'm tired of seeing that girl's mother on television and am tired of Dr. Phil giving advice, whoring his books, and pushing advertisments on his viewers during his talks (Wow, Daisy Fuentes has a clothing line. How convenient they can mention that while helping this girl with her low self-esteem).

To his credit he did do a show on missing non-caucasian women.

selena 2005-10-13 04:33 PM

I was tired of hearing about her about 3 days into it.

Think of all the non white women and all the children that have went missing or been victims of violence since Holloway disappeared.

Thing is, we probably can't think of many of them, because their faces haven't been on cnn a zillion times.

I don't mean to sound like I don't feel for her family. I am a parent, and I can't imagine the nightmare. At the same time, this is rather like the whole Elizabeth Smart thing again in terms of media coverage.

Yup. When you know that your daughter was raped and murdered and you know who did it - screw the media. Fly to Aruba, put their severed heads on the police chief's steps and fly home. End of story.

Platinum Bryan 2005-10-13 04:43 PM

Whatever happened did they charge anyone? I know they had some judge's son or something like that. Are they still holding him?

docholly 2005-10-13 04:49 PM

That's one reason why my daughter will never go to a Catholic school. I remember, those girls were wild. When you said a date with the preacher's daughter or one of the local Catholic schoolgirls everyone knew you were getting laid. I have found memories of those little sluts. Gawd bless them :)

This is why I worry about my niece. Her father is a born-again Christian (reformed alcoholc and heavy drug user - goes to Narcotics Anonymous multiple times a week). The mother is one step away from having Munchausens-by-proxy, she'a complete fucking whiney attention whore. Anyway, my niece lives in what we child psych freaks refer to as "a house of no". Anytime she wants something, she's told no. Anytime she wants to do something or go somewhere, she's told no. She's in elementary school, but she already has something very devilish in her eyes. She's not allowed to visit us without her parents (and I hate them) because her father came to pick her up once a while back and found her and my daughter jumping on our couch. He nearly busted a nut scolding her to get off the couch. My wife told him that his rules apply at his house, but at our house kids are allowed to play. So...they don't visit us. :D The last time my wife visited them, she said that Rachel is so well behaved now that it's scary.

Her teen years are going to be interesting. My wife and I are betting that she'll be Cleo some day.:)

Wazza 2005-10-13 08:54 PM

Her stepfather's called Jugg Twitty... what more do you need to know?

I wonder if Cleo's parents were that strict. This is diffently a girl that will soon be doing anything to get back at her parents.

I can understand how the story came back to life but why was it ever a story any way? Is America really that interested?

juggernaut 2005-10-14 12:39 AM

60 minutes had a story on this and asked why the media only covers certain stories. Never got a real answer, but they did have on the head of the network and asked him right out about the race issue. When they aired it there was a young black girl who was missing for the same period of time and she got maybe 10 mins worth of coverage. When they asked why, he stated that it was very hard for the news to cover all the missing cases. When they asked why cover one more then others, he admitted it was about ratings and from their polls pretty young blonde hair blue eyes prom queens are more likely to get the sympathy viewer then the unemployed on welfare with 10 kids from 10 dads minority.

Mark my words - there will be another terrorist "plot, attack or warning" within days - Bush's poll numbers that came out yesterday are amazingly low - and probably will be against an area that is highly black as they have dropped to 2% support for Bush as of yesterday.

Of course it was also disclosed yesterday that besides the NY subway plot being a fake - now the "supposed letter" between the terrorists in Iraq was faked by the Bush Admin as well.
I think it was one of the newsmen for MSNBC that blogged the 13 times that we have had a warning or raised the "threat level" and the all were within hours or days of some bad news for the administration - just coincidence though Im sure :)

You think he can do it so closely to the NY fake? It was blatently obvious right after he lost the 1st debate and most Americans didn't pick up on it. In fact most still didn't with the last one but don't you think sooner or later people will catch on?

It's one thing to do the alerts but to keep trying to make us believe that terroists are sitting in Iraq planning on attacking the US 9,000 miles away instead of the troops in thier backyard? That's just silly.

Damn it Moby! You owe me a new sarcasm sensor. You just fried mine. :D

SirMoby - I was just reading today that the purported letter between the Al Quaeda 2nd in command and some guy in Iraq running the terrorist cells - that was brought out by the US a few days ago as an intercepted letter - is also fake - they had an Arab language expert look at it and the terms that were used in it or not terms that any Al Quaeda would ever stoop to using - he said it was written by someone trying to sound like they were involved but two words that were used were actually written wrong and turned out to be an insult in their language - and insults that no one would come close to using addressing someone in a leadership role of the terrorists :)

I'd like to read that report even though common sense tells me there is no way anyone in Iraq is plotting to attack a target 9,000 miles away.
