Loose 20 pounds in twenty minutes while getting a lower interest rate on your mortgage and at no extra charge grow a bigger penis and increase your breast size.

Jim 2003-11-24 03:48 PM

I wish someone would make a law about paper spam. Damn, I have never seen such a thing. Everyone hates getting spam but all you really have to do is hit delete.

Looks about as useless a the new ANTI-SPAM law here.. un-enforcable.:(

http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...+anti+spam+law

Problem with ours also includes massive search and seizure rights for the authorities.:(

I love the spams that are unintentionally written with ambiguous meanings. Here's a recent headline that cracked me up:

Get a KILLER Penis!!!! |jester|

~~~
Now my first thought was: What does the thing do, harpoon people to death?
I guess it's like having a weapon of mass destruction in your pants.
Your new killer penis will not only add an extra 6 inches to your love life, but you'll get 10-20 years in the state penitentiary, too.
Hmmm...have you ever noticed the similarities between the words penitentiary and penis?
I hate, hate, HATE SPAM - but, I'd rather be saddled with dealing it on my own terms than expect the guvment to handle it for me. Draconian anti-SPAM measures are much more likely to harm legitimate bulk-emailers than they are to take down serious, hardcore spammers.
Hardcore spammers use all kinds of tricks to hide their identity. The chances of anyone even bothering to track them down, much less succeeding, are relatively small.
OTOH suppose you run a legitimate, double-opt-in email list: With many of the Anti-SPAM measures introduced, the burden of proof is on YOU. If you're legit enough to use your own email addy and not spoof your headers, YOU are the one who's going to get called to the carpet - not the cheaters who hide behind layers of protection.
Don't think it won't happen. I have a mainstream website with a teenie, tiny, totally double-opt-in mailing list. I send out newsletters about once every six months, just to remind subscribers that we're still around. Last time I sent out a newsletter, I got back a message from a totally irate subscriber, demanding to know how on God's Green Earth I'd managed to find the wherewithal to violate his sacred email box (yeah, I'm paraphrasing, but only a very little bit). I sent back a personal email reminding him he'd asked to subscribe, along with the unsubscribe link and a personal promise to unsubscribe him myself if he wasn't comfortable clicking the link. I never heard back. I unsubscribed him anyway. Asshole.
But I digress...
Anyway, to summarize:
I hate SPAM
I hate unnecessary laws even more than I hate SPAM
Trust me...its never going away.
We get calls here at the office... Allmost to unreal to
beleive...
We get death threats, bomb threats, people wanting to kill our pets, burn our office down, burn our houses down, attack our network.
Then we ask the mailer (our client) if it was opt-in. He replies with the guys IP, date, time, site he entered his info.
Then you confront the accuser... and or course, he doesnt reply back, Or he totally forgot about joining that letter.
These laws are only gonna hurt legit webmasters.
I dont think no spammer has ever used his real header for mailing.
Those laws are not gonna solve anything.
Tommy 2003-11-25 09:43 AM
Ya know whats funny
everytime we have a thread about spam
there is a little information like Hank provided
then lots of other webmasters like Dr Bizzaro post something like
Quote:
I hope 100's of fucking spammers get HUGE ass fines and/or go to jail.
and then we have Jim who always says something like: I dont know whay everyone hates spam. All you have to do is hit delete.
Its not they are cutting down trees to send it
what i find funny is that Jim is so far off on the other side
for the momment spam is here to stay, I just read an article in newsweek
about some spamer who claims to be making something like 30 million a month
urb 2003-11-25 11:01 AM
30 million a month?
Lets suppose that you send out a million emails to a list..... and the response rate is similar to junk mail, which is about 2.5%.
That is 25,000 people who are going to maybe click that link...... then let's suppose out of the 25,000 people 2.5% actually buy something.
That 625 sales @ a figure of about $20 per sale.
That's $12,500 per email. Hypothetically speaking a spammer may send out 1 email per day.... which brings in a grand monthly total of $375,000 per month.
So to make 30 million, a spammer would have to send 80 emails per day.
Tommy, that is toooo funny|jester|
That's $360 mil per yr...That spammer must be microsoft|skull|
Tommy 2003-11-25 12:27 PM
Mabe it was 3 milion
it was in newsweek last week so its a reliable source
RawAlex 2003-11-25 12:54 PM
Spam won't go away until they replace SMTP (the mail protocol) with something a little more secure and less easily spoofed. Right now it is too easy to hide behind open relays, faked headers, and freebie redirection services so that the actual sending cannot be found.
Tommy, there are a couple of spammers (like Alan Ralsky) who claim to be making really big dollars. They are running anywhere between 5 and 20 campaigns per day, sending tens of millions of emails per day. Even a low return rate is profitable. However, as companies like AOL, MSN, and Earthlink work to block out more spam, it makes it harder for these people to make money. Over time, the return per email sent is dropping.
More importantly, there is a serious lack of new product for them to promote, so all you are seeing now is an endless parade of penis patches, diet drugs, and model RC cars. That also leads to fewer and fewer buyers per email sent. This will cotninue to lower the value of spam as a marketing tool.
I was hoping that the spam law was going to work to punish the beneficiaries of the spam (the programs that actually process for these spammers) and stop the demand for spam.
I agree! Don't need my tax dollars paying more govt employees to sit around and solve nothing.
plus dosent it say we can spam all we want as long as we include a po box??? i can go get a po box, does that mean i can send 2 million emails a day??? this law makes now sence. well, i dont get much spam so it doesnt bother me i hate pop-ups and hijackers. esspecially when i am checking stats lol. why do some sposors pop-up their sites to us who get the content for free??? maybe i am crazy but not only is it annoying as hell, what kind of marketing plan is that if you already have the content and sell it why would you buy it??? |jester|
