Servers Down for LL and Directories???
Have a question for all LL and directory owners....on average, how often does your web host have server issues which puts your site offline? And for another question...how much down time in a given period (say monthly) would you consider moving to a new host?
|
I've been down twice in 10 years for less than an hour total :)
|
I've been down too much over the last couple of months, time to switch hosts I guess. If your down for more than an hour every month you should really consider doing the same.
|
The host I've been using for 3 years or more was always really good, except for the last 3 months now, they seem to have regular occurances of servers being down, mysql servers down and the longest period offline was almost 26 hours. Excuse was someone was running a script on their site that had serious implications on their systems. Anyways, I'd say in the last 3 months they've been down for like 30 hours+...It's a shame because it seems like sometime this year they've started to have issues, so I just wanted to know if others have had regular downtimes....I really hate the thought of moving my sites to a new host...but for the sake of business, I will make this decision over the next couple weeks.

Since I moved to my new host some time back I havent been down for a second :)
|
If you guys don't mine me asking...who do you use for hosting?
|
I switched hosts a while back because my sites were down more and more and I was having to wait hours for support.
I moved to cyberwurx, had no downtime during the move and my support ticket gets answered usually within an hour. It was a real pain in the ass moving everything and checking that there were no 404's/missing images etc. Lisa |

I like to host in two places. The majority of my free sites are at Phatservers and I am very happy with them. However my main linklist and ad server are at the same place as Fonz and I have had way too much downtime.. Plus other problems like having my IP changed without being told. I am going to move that to COLO-CATION in the new year. I keep putting it off as the database is HUGE and I know it will be a pain in the ass.

natalie - I think you would be pleasantly surprised at the ease of the move - I was - I had LLs with huge databases, TGPs with mysql databases that were out of this world and almost 200 domains on one of my servers with many different scripts ranging from comus to TDavids old LL script - and the move was done in less than one day with Colo's help. I never had a minute of downtime during the move, as we left everything running on the old box till the DNS resolved to the new one. With cd34's help we had everything running smoothly on all the scripts within 24 hours, and he took the time to actually look at the programming of some of the scripts and fix things as the code writers were not available for the move.

I have 2 hosting accounts at powerstorm.net one of them has never been down that I know of... The other was down half the night one time. I think there is a thread about it somewhere... A lot of people had sites down. At least they waited till the slowest time of night traffic wise to do what ever kept the server offline I guess.

Another |thumb for the fine folks at Colo-cation. EXTREMELY helpful people and undeniably strong servers. It is the only host that I've moved away from that I can honestly say it was NOT the host's fault. (I went a little nuts) I've been bouncing from host to host for 3 or 4 years and Colo were the first and only ones who ever informed me that one of my scripts was being exploited. Also, one of Chris' guys responded immediately on ICQ when I cried out one night that some cocksucker had found a way to upload huge Anime wmv's into the background of one of my link lists. He instantly resolved the matter and deleted the files that I couldn't control anymore. (I'm known for my use of free and questionable scripts ;)) They run a tight fucking ship, without a doubt. If I'm ever man enough to eat that big friggin' slice of humble pie, you'll probably see me back at Colo with Linkster, Cleo, Jim, Urb,...should l go on? :)

I have hosting at Colocation and Webair and can recommend both.

What is funny (strange) with the host I use and a buddy of mine, is that they are fast with support responses...usually within 30 minutes at the most. I've even had it a couple times the owner would even talk to me on the phone. They've been around for a few years and up to this year they never had any major issues. I am wondering if the problems with servers is the result of their fast growth they seem to be getting. My buddy just the other night told me his sites were down because of a Mysql server issue and the response was "One customer was hogging all of the mysql resources on the server. It took us some time to figure out exactly who it was but we have spoken to him and hope to not see this again."
Now how strange is that excuse... Anyways, it looks like first New Years resolution will be to move to a new host for both of us. |
