I almost feel as if I must use windows - since 95% of the surfers surf with IE.

I like to see what they see

With Crossover Plugin or Wine, you can run IE natively in Linux.

Alternatively you can run Windows within VMWare and have IE running natively under Windows.

Microsoft did fund research on a system called Xen, but, pulled the ability for people to run Windows under Xen, but, that used to be another way to run it in Windows natively on Linux/Unix.

I believe MacOS/X has VirtualPC which would allow it to run as well.

On my adult sites 15-20% use Firefox, on my non-adult sites thats down to 8%! I think most adult surfers are making the move cos of all the nasties that eat IE for breakfast on some of the unscrupulous porn sites. Think now IE and FireFox are the two important browsers for us and beware... they treat tables differently!

And thats kinda like saying most of the people in the world speak chinese so I had better make all my sites Mandarin Pagecode friendly and add Chinese Subtitles.......:D

FireFox is good for testing since stuff looks almost identical in both the Mac and PC version.

I do have VirtualPC on my drive for testing. It's slow but the nice thing is that it is just a disk image file so if it gets a virus or something I just toss the image and grab a fresh on.

I'm guessing that next year when Macs start shipping using an Intel processor that Wine will work with Mac X just the way it does with Linux so no more having to use VirtualPC.

We keep a PC running XP over at Angel's place for testing and to run Yahoo video chat since she likes to play in the chat rooms and is Windows only. At least once a year the PC becomes unusable do to viruses and she just buys a new one.

Seems like if I check my pages in Safari, Firefox, and the old version of Mac IE they display properly in everything.

I use Mozilla 1.7 as my primary browser (a die hard Netscape user from wayyyyy back). Mozilla has a few navigation features that I prefer over Firefox, but for the most part the pages render the same. I always check new pages in both Mozilla and IE. Very very rarely do I have a page that renders properly in Mozilla that doesn't in IE, and I've never had a Mac user tell me my pages are FUBAR. Then again, I'm not trying to use XHTML, CSS, Javascript and who know what else, to make banners fly about your head while you browse.

I have Mozilla too and use it more then Firefox actually.

I also keep Opera in my Dock for checking pages and stuff.

It is very seldom that I have a problem with my stuff not displaying properly. I'm guessing that is is because I keep my code pretty simple and browser compliant.

My stats show 96% of my surfers use Windows. I may not like it but I have lots of software for it and that's what my customers use.

Cleo 2006-01-02 02:19 PM

My stats show 93% using windows but only 75% using IE which has been falling each month and makes it that much more important to be sure that your code works properly in Mozilla based browsers.
