Strongbox Users

Yesterday a guy had his pass disabled because he logged in from two different countries, then he called CCbill and got another pass, then logged in from a bunch of different countries. I changed it and sent him an email and didn't accuse him of anything, just that I changed his pass and not to let anyone else use it. Today he tries to login from 3 countries, 3 ISPS, 3 IPs. I called CCBill and had them cancel his account and told them why.
How do you handle password traders?
Strongbox Rocks!

Cleo 2006-01-18 02:13 PM

Usually give them a few chances, show them their Strongbox history, and then cancel their account if they keep on doing it.

Chop Smith 2006-01-18 02:14 PM

Same here. I think Srongbox is great. I am fond of Ray. However, he is hard to find sometimes.

Ray when they unlock the door to let you see sunshine, email me at chop at choponthelake.com. I need you to do a tad bit of work on some new Chop's Cash sites.

Greenguy 2006-01-18 02:20 PM

I'm gonna come off like an ass, but it seems every few months we have someone saying how wonderful Strong Box is out of the blue.

You paid for a script that works & does it's job - great |thumb

There's no need to post about it on the main forum.

Thanks Cleo.
I was thinking about showing them the stongbox history, but I was afraid I'd be tipping my hand. Giving away to much info. Maybe a summary is the way to go. Just tell them so many ips, countries etc. But maybe I'm just paranoid.

Cleo 2006-01-18 02:39 PM

We just copy and paste their history and mail it to them.

We just want them to stop giving out their passwords, not loose them as members.

Even if they know what we know I don't see how they are going to get around Strongbox.

Vink 2006-01-18 02:53 PM

I think you're right. That's what I'll do in the future.
Thanks for your input Cleo.

I agree with this. I was trying to be tactful in saying Ray Morris is a genius but his support sucked from day one and now I can not contact him. Hell, after prepaying him it took DD and Kevin to shake him up to get my installation. Of course that was two years ago and things could have changed.

raymor 2006-01-19 06:34 AM

If I ran a pay site I'd probably send the report just because it would be
entertaining, even though I think it best not to "tip your hand".

I certainly appreciate Vink's post. I dedicated several years of hard work to
research and development trying to make Strongbox useful for webmasters
and it's very much appreciated when someone says that they are finding
it to be useful.

I made a post about phatservers the other day because once again when I emailed
them a support request at 1 AM they took care of it and replied to me within
about 4 minutes, which was amazing because I figure it would take about
6 minutes to do what I asked even if they were sitting there checking email
every 30 seconds. Add in the 45 seconds or whatever to read me email and
type out the reply and they must have started working on my request three
minutes BEFORE I sent it. I swear Mike @ Phatservers has some sort of
customer service time machine where he gets requests before they are sent.
Granted my post was in reply to someone asking about hosting, but I
figure it's useful for webmasters to know about products and services that
out perform expectations . I don't post about the hosts who reply to support
tickets in a few hours - they're doing what hosts do, great. I do post about
exceptional products and services.

There's actually a second benefit for webmasters in those kinds of posts,
I think, that isn't immediately obvious. Like pay sites, over half of the price
of many products and services sold to webmasters goes to pay for advertising.
If no one ever posted about Strongbox we'd be spending $5,000 / month
to put a banner on this board and that means we'd have to charge you
guys twice as much. Chop, Vink, Cleo al others have all saved a significant
amount of money because webmasters like them are kind enough to let
each other know when they find something good. Of course I'm sure one
Strongbox user wouldn't mind paying twice as much if it meant I'd
be sending him $5,000 to advertise on his board. ;)

Chop, while it's certainly true that the promptness of my customer service
is my biggest weakness, I don't see any emails from you, nor have a recieved
any phone calls from you, so I'm not sure why you are saying you can't
reach me. If you don't have my number any more it's posted prominently
on my web site. Anyway, I've just emailed you. I've been training a new
guy to help with installs and support and am looking for someone else
to hire as well, so hopefully response time will improve. It certainly does
need improvement. If any one has any suggestions on how best to keep
up with email I'm all ears. I half jokingly mentioned to Mike @ Phatservers
that I should come work for him for a month to learn how he does it.

This post makes me think that the next time someone starts one of these "back patting" threads, I'm just gonna delete it.

Vink bought a script that works, plain & simple. Can you imaging if we let everyone post about every fucking script that they bought that works? "ATO is fucking great!" "Link Admin saved the day!" "I love WSFTP!" etc.

It's almost like you expect this from your buyers in order to keep your costs down, but to me it's just clever spam.

Who are you talking about? Neither Jim nor I use Strongbox (we've just been to stupid in the past to move or comment on these types of threads)

While I didn't say that either you or Jim use it, there are certainly some
board owners who do. Of course I used to run the servers and serve as
essentially the CIO they for one of the bigger boards, so it
makes sense they'd use my software.
Since you brought up you or Jim using it, though, you may wish to check with
Jim before you post again saying he doesn't use Strongbox.
I could very well be wrong, but I think he has a few sites using it.

Wow, I wouldn't be too suprised to hear that from some people, but am
suprised to hear it from you. I know you've done a lot to get where you are
today, and one of the things you did from very early on was run a very clean,
efficient link site where you put a lot of effort into meeting the needs of
both surfers and webmasters. I can remember quite a few threads on the
old boards talking about how to get traffic, with webmasters mentioning
your site in probably thousands of posts. One thread from probably 1998
or 1999 still sticks out where people where saying that while both you
and Persian Kitty could send huge amounts of traffic, you were much
more pleasant to deal with. I have to think that the thousands of posts
webmasters made back in the late 90s have been very, very good to you,
along with of course everything else you've done to get your name out
to webmasters. The same thing still with this board, of course, though
perhaps less so - new webmasters hear about your board through word
of mouth. I would have thought that someone who has benefitted so
greatly from webmasters mentioning his site to other webmasters wouldn't
be so violently opposed to the concept. Maybe you're just in a funky mood,
who knows.

Greenguy 2006-01-19 09:52 AM

1 - Jim has no paysites.

2 - I know I'm coming off like an ass in this thread & I know you have a good product, but my radar goes off when I see threads like this & I don't want them to become "past practice" where everyone & their grandmother is posting about scripts or sites or whatever that do what they are supposed to do.

I'm trying to nip this practice in the bud now because I can see it being abused in the future & you just got into the middle of it.

Greenguy 2006-01-19 09:55 AM

Let me also remind everyone of how this board works, especially with spam - if there was a thread started over in "I'm Looking For..." asking for password protection software & it got filled with Strongbox recommendations, I'd be fine with that.

It's the unsolicited posts that come off as spam - they always have & they always will - this is not a new concept for this board & those that read it on a regular basis know this.

Stop reading the board and go back to work.

If you think we charge $5k/month for advertising on GGandJ, we are charging way too little :) Let me know if you need the real prices. :)

Vink 2006-01-19 12:23 PM

Sorry to cause such a big thing. I do understand your point Greenguy.
I should have just asked what people did when the caught someone trading passwords to their paysite. That was the real motive behind the question. I didn't mean to be a back patter.

LOL. Yeah, that might help.

Yes, please send me those prices. support@bettercgi.com. Thanks.

I must have been thinking of Lee rather than Jim using Strongbox, or something.
I better stop replying and therefore bumping this thread, though.
Sure was nice of the green one to bump it a couple of times. ;)

Eh Green, would it be spammy if out of the blue I said "wow, that
'Greenguy's Stats' link has some really useful info. I never looked
at that before."? ;)

Greenguy 2006-01-19 03:21 PM

Quit spamming my stats :D
