paycounter turned into a trojan?

Since a couple of weeks I get all kind of warnings when opening a page I have paycounter installed. Also submitting to the hun gave me a rejection for having malicious software. So is paycounter screwing up things lately?

Yes, never allow exploits. All free counters have some sort of exploit :(

sabaroth 2006-02-19 08:52 AM

Google tells me it is seen as spyware indeed, I am trying sexcounter now but this is also regarded as spyware?

ronnie 2006-02-19 09:00 AM

Many places that supply traffic, LL, TGP's dont like out side counters these days, mainly for the reasons you mention. Do you have to have a counter? Server stats are much more accurate and give you more detailed info.

The great thing about a counter like paycounter is it gives me a onepage-overview of all my sites so I can spot any trafficproblem in a second. Serverstats have to be seen site by site which takes me far too much time unfortunately.

Considering that Sexcounter was all but nailed in the world of trojans and spyware / malware, I can't exactly recomment that you go from one counter to another. You may want to talk to your host about looking for some sort of stats consolidation so you check things out more quickly.

Third party counters are (a) a traffic leak and (b) something on your page you can't control. You are only doing them a favor by having them on your pages anymore.

Yes, using free counters is a thing of the past. I am taking them off of all of my sites, and the ones I haven't remembered to take them off I will be as soon as I get to it.

I don't trust the exploits and viruses they each have.

I will let you draw your own conclusions.

Yup the message is all too clear, kinda suspicious anyway, a counter that is not visible on the page they gotta get their profit from somewhere right?

sabaroth 2006-02-19 07:28 PM

Anyway, sometimes I still dream of the days I woke up and checked all my sites with the Cybererotica counter, what was wrong with that? A good counter that also was a banner for a sponsorprogram. Brilliant and never seen again.

RawAlex 2006-02-19 08:04 PM

Sab, you won't see it again because it isn't a good economic model anymore. The same reason you don't see new counter programs out there... the economics are no longer right for those things.

Im am not convinced they are talking about sexcounter.com All those links were talking about sexTRACKER anyway. Isnt it possible there was a trojan or worm called sexcounter? I cant find one trace of anyone accusing sexcounter.com of anything. If it is out there I cant find it. Usually if something like that happened, people would talk about it. Especially if it was a webmaster that knew it came from sexcounter.com I can't imagine anyone who would allow that to continue for any amount of time. If anyone has any real links to back up this claim against sexcounter.com I would love to see it! Just took their code off my sites, I want to investigate this further.

logan, it is a very, very long deal that explains how sextracker did their deal. However, you can look here:

http://www.google.com/search?q=sexco...en-US:official

and you will see that sexcounter has also been caught up at least a little bit in stuff.

If you have third party stuff on your site, you have to patrol it like mad and make sure they don't take advantage of your surfers. I am just waiting for someone to come out with an RSS worm and then pretty much half the blogs in the world will be fucked.

Good morning everybody.

SexTRACKER is NOT SexCOUNTER
SexTRACKER is NOT SexCOUNTER
SexTRACKER is NOT SexCOUNTER
SexTRACKER is NOT SexCOUNTER
SexTRACKER is NOT SexCOUNTER

Sexcounter has been caught up in no malware/spyware/trojan scandals and never will be. It is an invisible counter which provides NO traffic leaks and you are doing us no explicit favours by using it. We provide this value added service to webmasters free of charge with no hidden agenda.

The only reference you will find to Sexcounter in any antivirus/antispyware/anti(insert another buzzword here) software is with regards to our cookie which some people have decided is evil because it is used to track visitors.

At least ONE BIG PORN SITE uses sexcounter.

My point is "what is possible" with third party counters, your included. That Sextracker has done bad in the past, and now paycounter is apparently tripping off alarms is a good indication that third party counters can be used for less than honest means.

Am I saying your counter is specifically bad? Nope. I provided some links for people to go and look and draw their own conclusions.

My link sites and whatnot will not accept any page with a counter on it.

Sorry to sound suspicious, but then what do you get out of it to pay the bill for the servers you use?

Loganp8000 2006-02-20 03:18 PM

cool

Im glad sexcounter came in to ease peoples minds. I always have worried about that, but I think sexcounter is one of the more trustworthy counters! Anyway, i just wish awstats would work with pennywize!

They can sell advertising on SexCounter.com, or advertise their own products to webmasters.

I also think it sounds fishy, having a totally free counter.
But we've had no problems using it.
