frustration with ftp setup

I feel like a complete fool because I cannot set up my ftp client for uploading. I can successfully make the site on my wysiwyg NVU software, but when I want to upload it to the site it uploads to the wrong parts or says path not found. I am guessing it has to do with how my pages are linked, but I am unsure how to link correctly because there is no tutorial for linking folders, directories, ect. |huh

How long did it take you guys to learn how to use your FTP properly? or is it just me?|banghead|

I can learn the business side easy, but the technical side is proving to be my downfall. Any help is appreciated.

I'm hoping I don't have to learn CSS|shocking|

have you figured your ftp problems out yet? and if not what ftp client are you using to upload your stuff?

Jim 2006-03-18 07:27 AM

When I started, I really had no idea what an ftp client was. Netscape, the only browser worth using was my ftp client. That and whatever Microsoft called Windows Explorer back then. When someone told me about wsftp, it made my life a lot easier.

karomesis 2006-03-18 12:18 PM

Jim do you mean webshell FTP? That's what I have currently, and I can't seem to figure out how to organize the directories/subdirectories/folders ect to make my simple 4 page site upload from my wysiwgy software.

Kinky, I have yet to figure it out, and am ripping my hair out of my head as I type.My FTP client is WebShell.

eksites 2006-03-18 12:21 PM

I've been a dedicated wsftp-le fan for the last 7 or 8 years. Very basic, but you know what's going from where to where. It's just about the only way I ftp, and I use it for big and small files. |roses| Good luck with what you're trying, though. :)

Oh, your trying to upload your files using your page creation/editing software. If you can't figure it out, I'd suggest you upload the pages with a real FTP program. I personally use both FlashFXP and CuteFTP. SmartFTP has a free version. I wish I could help you, but I can't find my way around those WYSIWYG editors.

plateman 2006-03-18 02:13 PM

I tryed all those ftp programs and found cute the easiest to use...I think cute has a trial run and thats what I did...

Kinky 2006-03-18 02:32 PM

if you want a really good free ftp client ws_ftp95 is free, you can download it here: http://www.ccs.uottawa.ca/download/index.html

it's the WS_FTP LE 5.08 for Windows 95/98

I've never tried uploading with editor software, just save the files into a folder on your comp and upload with a seperate ftp client like others said before |thumb

yes Jim I was trying to remember the name of the old Netscape browser, it was Netscape Navigator wasn't it? it was either that or my AOL 1.0 |jester|

Trev 2006-03-18 02:48 PM

I have to agree with UW. Just save your files, close your editor, open your ftp program and upload the files. Just the new pages, or the entire folder if it's new.

Also, I find it nice to have cuteftp sort the file directory by date, so that the newest stuff is always on top. Easy to find what I was working on that way.

karomesis 2006-03-18 03:22 PM

Thanks for the replies and links guys|thumb I'm almost there|headbang|

I'm going to save and upload, and not attempt to reinvent the wheel.

Tommy 2006-03-18 07:24 PM

Maybe you should just give up on it

I think after I used a browser for uploading, I went to cuteftp. Then I found wsftp and that is what I have been using ever since. I also could never get the hang of using the ftp client that comes with most editors. As for using WYSIWYG editors, I never used any of them. I never liked the way they put so much extra junk on the pages that aren't needed.

Surfn 2006-03-19 10:52 AM

I'm still using cute ftp. I'm on day 5,000+ of my free trial :D

MrYum 2006-03-19 11:00 AM

I use ws ftp...have been for years |thumb

Always use a dedicated ftp client...you'll be a much happier camper in the long run :)

skishy 2006-03-19 01:31 PM

I agree with the guy obove me I wasn't happy with anything until Wizzo told me to use ws ftp

walrus 2006-03-19 02:48 PM

CuteFTP is my personal favorite but no matter which one it is, get some FTP software.

CalModels 2006-03-19 02:56 PM

my personal opinion... the best ever ftp server/client is filezilla..

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

its opensource and stable as hell... very fast and multi threaded... i use both the client and server, and have never had either of them crash ever... which is saying a LOT for a win32 app :)

karomesis 2006-03-19 07:30 PM

just out of curiosity, how many of you guys make from scratch your own freesites, galleries, LL, ect? I am almost at the point where I just order the damn custom templates from someone and start putting the pics/movies in for submissions. I have sales goals for the end of this year and summer of 07 that I need to meet, 6 and 20 sales a day respectively.Every day that goes by without sites to submit is another day lost|banghead|

I build every page with CuteHTML, a simple HTML editor.

karomesis 2006-03-19 08:06 PM

Useless Warrior and Surfn, how difficult would it be for you guys to just stop using your current editor and use another? easy? a pain in the ass?
Or is it , you've seen one, and you've seen them all?

I don't use an editor so it would be fairly easy to quit :D

karomesis 2006-03-19 08:24 PM
