Moving to the Dark Side

I've decided its time to join the majority of you and migrate to Word Press. I've just finally tired of hacking up a script everytime I want to do something and knowing all to well that my compadre's in WP land add a plug-in and away they go. I just...can't...fucking...take it anymore!

So, when I get stuck, frustrated, throwing shit at the walls crazy over the weekend, where is a good place to find good information without wasting a bunch of time.

Also, themes where are they? Any must have plug-ins for shit like adding pictures to posts? Any advice whatsover? Anyone willing to share their |potleaf| while I make myself intensely crazy for a few days?

Lemmy 2006-03-31 06:02 PM

This should keep you busy for a while.

I have to be honest with you. I am such an old-school stubborn fart that when I want to do anything other then just add text & links in word-press I do it in html. Probably takes more time, but I just can't help myself.

I spent probably 2 weeks on and off messing with my theme, and I still had issues, which anna pointed out when she added a comment to my blog and I thought, how the fuck could she do that. So prepare for some time playing with a theme if you plan to make one from scratch or alter it.

As far as quick links for help, this one I personally found valuable: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags

Good luck Walrus. |thumb

Thanks, I have no doubt that I'll try to find a template that is somewhere near what I'm looking for and then tear it a part and basicly start all over again.

As far as old skool html, that's how everything gets added currently in my blog. I just want to do some shit that I have spent 3 weeks on / off trying to get working with bBlog that I know WP has a plugin for. There comes a point, no matter how accustomed you've grown to a tool where it just won't do the job anymore and I think that's the point I've reached. So I'm gonna lock me and my good buddy Jack in a room tomorrow and not come out till shits the way I want it or I need more Jack.

if ya need any help with anything bud just hit me up ill be home ALLLLLLL weekend...just got 10 new pornstar blog domains lol

At the end of the day, when you stop hitting your head against the wall and start just producing porn, you will feel better. People don't care about the plumbing, they care about what is really out there.

Bax, thanks man, dont be surprised if I hunt you down.

Alex, words of wisdom as always, I know sometimes I get more carried away with the presentation as with the meat and potatoe's and need a little reminder that it's the meat and potatoe's that sell the dinner.

Hi Walrus,

Welcome to WordPress. I like it, there's a plugin to do almost anything you want and when you get bored you can write your own plugins. The possibilities are endless.............

What? Not ever for a "comfort break?"

walrus 2006-04-01 10:39 PM

Ok, you WP dudes, I'm looking for a plugin that will let me add multiple RSS feeds to a side-bar. Seen any around?

Otherwise I won't migrate my existing blogs over, just start any new ones on it. The templates don't seem too bad to mess with (bBlog is definately much easier) and ya, I have been missing the feature set WP has.

Baxter 2006-04-01 11:07 PM

you mean something like this walrus

Now that's a handy plugin but not quite what I'm looking for. What I'm looking for is a RSS reader that would pull the whole feed directly into the side bar. Ideally, I could select which parts of the feed I wanted.

One of my sponsors has developed a really cool new feed which has mini-movies embedded in the feed. These movies fit perfectly in a sidebar (especially the size of my sidebars). But besides that there are a number of sponsors with gallery feeds and thumbs that would definately be handy to add to a sidebar as well.

I found plugins that I could import any number of feeds into my posts and I found plugins that would do a single feed and add the links but not one to handle the type of feeds I'm talking about above.

wankmaster 2006-04-02 12:44 AM

I've not played much with RSS feeds, but they look simple technically.

If you don't find what you need it shouldn't be all that difficult to hack an existing feed reading plugin or code one up from scratch. It would make a pretty interesting project.

msanchez 2006-04-03 12:16 AM

You copuld always try to use CARp or something to put those RSS feeds in your sidebar? Justa thought.

walrus 2006-04-03 10:05 AM

Using CARP or writing my own plugin would sort of defeat the purpose of moving to WP as I'd have to spend the time figuring out the ins and outs of doing either when I already have a platform that I understand the ins and outs of pretty well.

Other issue I'd much rather avoid is that my current bBlog installation probably could never be updated (if bBlog ever gets updated) because I've hacked so much into it already. The whole concept of moving to WP is not putting myself into that situation again....oh and having all the features in plugin form that I've hacked into bBlog for myself.

He says "The dark Side" I thought this thread was going to be something good LOL

I've thought about trying wordpress, but what I use does everything I need. Maybe if I start a new blog, if that ever happens.

For me, I'll be conforming to the "norm"...that is the dark side but having played around with WP, I am a convert.

twn 2006-04-04 04:51 PM

I was also hoping for some good splog/feed stealing drama when i first read the subject :)
I don't have yet seen a plugin for wp that can plug rss feed content in the sidebar, thumblogger can do it, but that's not your pick. There are little services that will parse the rss feed for you and give you a bit javascript code, if you put that code in the sidebar the content of the rss feed will be displayed. But that is javascript.

ronnie 2006-04-04 07:07 PM

I use a nice little PHP script, actually one that you told me about Walrus, that I use to pull rss feeds on to my pages. I have'nt had time to mess with it too much, but I do have it in places where I limit the number of posts to pull from the feed, number can be what ever I want. Plus from what I remember, it puts the feed in an array, which could be messed with how ever you wanted.

Point is, it's a php script and far as I know, you can put php into any blog. After all, they are just templates, the ones I know of, so it's just adding some php code to the template. I use php code on my blogs all the time.

Course not sure exactly what your looking to do. Hit me up on ICQ maybe I can help. Though I am no PHP guru, thats for sure.

Using Magpie's not a bad idea. I'm used to bBlog so adding anything has some problems...unless you are really good at smarty tags. I'll hit u up dude, thanks.
