Alexa Ratings

Call me an idiot, but I’ve never even really knew how to check what my Alexa rating was until yesterday. I had a lot about it, but never really bothered with it. I wish I never had seen it now, because that shit is addictive – lol.

I was quite surprised to see that I am actually doing a lot better than I thought I was. Jays XXX Links was in the low 20,000 range:

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...xxx-links.com/

What I was really surprised by was that way better than I thought I was. A lot of link lists that I was sure were bigger than me, I was actually bigger than. I’m not posting this to brag or anything, more just express my surprise.

Does anyone know how accurate Alexa is and how to they figure this stuff out?

I did a little research on linklists - according to Alexa.

These guys are really big:

Tommys Bookmarks – 3000 range
Green Guy – 6000 range
Persian kitty

Three are big:

******* links – 15,000 range
Penis bot – 15,000 range
Jays xxx links – 20,000 range
Hoes – 20,000 range
Danger dave – 20,000

These are also big site in the 25,000 – 50000 range

Megapornlinks
Cleos
Link for sex
Smut gremlins links

I just found the data kind of interesting and I thought I would share it.

What do you guys think about Alexea?

Ramster 2003-12-12 06:01 PM

DangerDave can tell you more about it I'm sure but the way they get their traffc count is only from people who have the Alexa toolbar installed on their browser.

Either way, nice going for your site.

Cleo 2003-12-12 06:07 PM

Well don't I feel dumb, I've never even heard of the Alexa Ratings.

DangerDave 2003-12-12 06:42 PM

Alexa, has been around almost as long as GG and I have. It has always tried to measure site popularity in an objective and indirect way. Previously (and possibly stiil?) with proxy logs, and now with the Alexa Toolbar.

Lately they have copped some crap because their toolbar is classed as spyware by some places/programs, as it returns data to Alexa... it of course says this when you download it;)

http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/movers_shakers?lang=en - always interesting.

It "collects" all sorts of info - http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?u...nguysboard.com

Traffic stats - http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...sboard.com#top

Comparison stats - http://www.alexa.com/data/details/tr...sboard.com#top

LinkPop/Backward links - http://www.alexa.com/data/ds/linksin...nguysboard.com

The toolbar has some cool tools too.. and has had a pop-up blocker. longer than most others.

I think they are probably counting the "target new" when you click on board links and get a new page.

Cleo 2003-12-12 07:34 PM

This is one of the things I like about this business, always something new to learn, keeps things interesting. :)

It says that Cleo's Links has no popups. lol

What is up with the user rating? I see that I have 4 stars, how did they decide how many stars to give me?

It also says that my site is slow.

Dr Bizzaro 2003-12-12 07:41 PM

DrBizzaro's ringing in around the 5k mark. (It has been lower in the past, I assume it dropped because an influx of traffic moving sites.
Either way.....

I like their WayBack machine better.....

If I remember correctly - the "slow" time is based on the size of the page - so the bigger the page and more graphics the "slower" its rated. Of course Ive always been slow - but Im told that has its advantages |jester|

Special "Ed" 2003-12-13 07:50 AM

I didn't know that "slow" meant that the page is LARGE in file size? hmmm? cool, I was wondering about that. |bananna|

Install the Alexa bar and watch your site's ranking jump. :)

I pulled my Alexa bar a long time ago because it came up as spyware. DangerDave has since convinced me that it isn't spyware.

Dr Bizzaro 2003-12-13 04:11 PM

Yeah, that Alexa Bar is sweet.

A friend of mine did that with his mainstream site and he jumped from like 250K to 150K after a few weeks since he hits his own site so often.

I used Alexa rankings alot to compare sites that I want to trade with, good way to see how long who's been and what kind of traffic anysite gets.
It might not be 100% accurate, but it gives overall idea.

DangerDave 2003-12-14 04:21 PM

I would challenge anyone to show me how/why their site improved in ranking after installing the bar on their own machine.

..and if by chance it does.. watch them turn it off as more webmasters abuse it..:(

Use it for what its meant to be for.. it is not a self bloody promotion tool. I have mine tuned off 90% of the time unless I am using it for a specific purpose!

I think Amazon has some big news coming out in the next 30 days or so. I've always used alexa for the last 15 months and this pass week was the first time they have put some effort and money into alexa. My guess is amazon is going to merge with either yahoo, Google or Microsoft.. I get some much trafficfrom googlenow it's a joke. There has to be a new place to be the industry standard for website ranking. I feel alexa will be that spot.|potleaf|

Wow - this has turned into a good thread.

What got me curious about it was that the guys I work with at Consumption Junction -- their claim to fame is they have around a 500 Alexa rating for CJ.

It is interesting - that's for sure.

I think the percentage of surfers currently using the Alexa bar is quite small. Which makes it quite sensitive to additional users. And as webmasters tend to visit their own sites on almost a daily basis, be it to use admin, check alterations or message boards; then it will have a positive effect on an Alexa ranking.

Remember when www.scroogle.com/ took a massive jump in traffic according to Alexa (7,500%) ? This was pretty much 95% webmasters visiting Scroogle, and those webmasters were more likely to have Alexa installed.

pornstar2pac 2003-12-16 05:35 PM

Hi, I just want to say i learned more about what alexa booster does. From that I decided not to be a sponsor for them. I would like someone in the industry that people listen too, speak about this new product that may be damaging to a select few.

I'm newand stilllearing. it has something to do with sending hitbots to your site and messes with alexarating. I'm just trying out new and different affiliate and this turn out to be a headache. Sorry and I will let you guys in on my next million dollar idea, when I think of one.|pcsucks|

Yeah - they base it by # of users per million using the toolbar and thier engine.
