Which do you prefer?
When you get an important document attached to an email, do you prefer a Word Document or an Acrobat Document? I ask because the new Office 2007 Beta gives you the option for both. And, the program as a whole is pretty cool :)
Cleo, I already know your answer :) |
If it's a form that you have to fill out, like a W9 then Acrobat is cool. If not then I really don't have a preference.
|
Personally I prefer text (ASCII). But if that is not possible, go for Acrobat then people who do not use Windows can read it (eg those strange weird people who have Macs).
|
Macs open both with equal ease with its built-in software but I think PDF keeps the formatting and layout better. Also with PDF you can embed the fonts so the font will stay the same even if the others don't have that font.
If it is something that needs stuff typed into the document and sent back then a Doc is preferred as the editors for PDFs are IMO just annoying. But if it is just FYI stuff then I'm .txt would be my choice but then putting the text in the email would be preferred anyway. |
Acrobat
tho it pisses me off. Nothing else matches it |
I never thought of paying the outragious price for an Acrobat writer but, I downloaded the newest office a couple of days ago and when I went to "save as", I was surprised to see "pdf file". I tested it and it worked great. I always liked the look of a pdf file and I think by now, most people can read them.
|
There are also several free and low price PDF creators. I never purchased Acrobat writer or MS Office, but I writer plenty of PDF files.

PDF is built-in to Macs. In fact it is the technology used to display everything on the screen. To make a PDF you just hit print and choose PDF instead of actually sending it to the printer.
An application called Preview is used to view PDFs. The free version of Adobe Acrobat reader has more features then Preview but for 99% of my needs I just use Preview as it is much faster then Acrobat reader. But Acrobat is also sold for Macs. It has features that expand the Mac's built-in features. People who do print work need these features and some other users too. PDF is a nice format if you want you document to look exactly the same on everyone's computer. |
PDF. Word documents can be easily changed so it's kind of silly sending important docs like contracts in Word format unless they're still a work in progress.
Things like documentation that contains URLs though. Those are constantly being updated and it's certainly nice to cut and past from a word, html or text document, which is something that you can't do in PDF. |
I'd also have to go with PDF format. It's easier to work with if you need to do a printout from a tables/formating perspective then compared to a .doc file.

i publish 2 newsletters that are sent out monthly and do them as a PDF because of the copywrites. However as was recently pointed out to me, anyone with a "goal" and a "ripper" can make changes if they want to.
|
I'm with Moby- anything important should be sent as a pdf to minimize the chances of it being changed. (fine print anyone?)
Also, since important documents such as contracts cost you $$ to have a lawyer draw up for you, a pdf is harder for others to rip off. |
I concur with the PDF crowd.
|
I down with PDF :)
|
I've been saving docs as PDF a lot, ever since Mac worked it into their OS. (Before that I used Adobe's software to create them.) I like the ability to retain the integrity of the fonts and layout the way I designed it, platform to platforms, and they print out just fine. My vote is in the PDF camp.

Checked the site dude, pretty cool, huh! And between WD or AD, I prefer Acrobat but since you got Office 2007 Beta there with you, I'll leave the judgment with you on which one to use. |Jim |
Well seeing how word is constantly used for exploits PDF for sure.
Plus anyone without acrobat, a mac, scansoft, or office 2003 might want to consider PDF CREATOR It installs a virtual pdf printer that you can print to from any windows program that you can print from. Only instead of actually physically printing it out it creates a pdf file |
