Future Internet World - Your Opinions

Just imagine: in not far future internet will control the world.
Google and Yahoo will control internet.
And those of us who will be on top positions of their search listings for sex and porn will control weighty part of the world :)
What do you think about it ? ;)

"Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature."

virgohippy 2006-09-27 04:02 AM

I disagree. I think there's room for other players to gather market share.

Sure, over the past few years they've grown in strength... but look at myspace, youtube, technorati... etc.

These places bring in loads of repeat surfers all by themselves too.

Great quote. What's it from? It reads like it could be pre-internet. |loony|

OK, its "Eats Shoots And Leaves" time.

Sorry to be a pedantic asswipe, but "the internet" will never control much. I think you mean "the Internet".

"the internet" is a small collection of computers connected in a local area, say in an office building or even just two computers on your desk networking. If you mean the thing that goes all around the world, connecting millions of computers and home of (amongst other things) the world wide web, then you mean "the Internet".

I think you mean intranet not internet. Other than being properly capitalized because it is a name there is no difference between internet and Internet.

"intranet" is the 'Americanisation' of "internet". I would assume this was to prevent confusion with "Internet". However the word "internet" was around before the Internet was created. The capital I was put onto the word "internet" as a name after it ceased to be a 'military only' network.

Then many years later a confused American coined the term "intranet" so he would not get Internet and internet muddled up.

Actually the last sentence is a guess, but the rest is accurate. Intranet is a new word, created long after internet and Internet were first used.

Although what you do if you want to start a sentence with "internet" is beyond me!

Did Lynne Truss rewrite her book for each geographic audience?
Britain, Canada and the US each take a different approach to certain forms of spelling and punctuation. Confusing? You bet, though not enough to get worked up over.

Mind you, I do enjoy watching Toby get all macho like this :D

Toby you may want to take a look at the link tickler posted. You will see that AVN use "Internet" instead of "internet". You want to say are full of shit too? Or maybe you would be better looking it all up in a dictionary.

I only quoted her book title to point out I was about to make a linguistic point. However most books written in English but outside America get 'translated' before being published in America. Mostly this is just so that the book is in a language Americans feel 'comfortable' with. But occasionally words have different meanings (vest for example) and sometimes American and English words differences can be extreme. For example the English word for a child's eraser is 'rubber', imagine an English kid walking into a general store in America wanting six erasers and asking for "a packet of six rubbers". Also, 'fanny' means 'cunt' in England. So if you are ever on holiday in England and get a severe pain in your ass, don't tell the English doctor that you have a pain in your fanny and then wonder why he refers you to a gynaecologist (and if you are male.....).

Getting back to Lynne Truss, did you know that "Eats Shoots And Leaves" sold tremendously all over the English speaking world, except in America, where it sold badly. I think Toby just demonstrated what this leads to. :)

Toby 2006-09-27 09:29 PM

ecchi, the AVN article has absolultely nothing relevant to the diatribe of bullshit you posted in response to my intranet vs internet post. The term Internet has it origins in the early 90's about the time TCP/IP protocol became the norm. If you have proof that it was used prior to that to refer to local networks then show it to me.

I've been working with computers nearly 30 years. I took my first programming course in 1977 and was a comp sci major in college during the late 70's and early 80's. The term "internet" was never used at that time.

I generally don't get worked up over such trivialities, but I've seen far too much bullshit passed off as fact lately, and in this case I was there and watched it happen.

bluemoney 2006-09-27 11:32 PM

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room."

Also Dr. Strangelove circa 1964 :D

ecchi 2006-09-28 03:18 AM

Yeah, point taken Bluemoney, this is a pointless argument. And it could end so fast if Toby were to look the matter up in a good dictionary. However it takes two to tango so I guess I am as much to blame as him. So we will just have to "agree to differ". Toby, you can go on believing what you like, I'll not argue with you about this anymore.

Toby 2006-09-28 03:55 AM

Fair 'nuff. I'll go on believing what I experienced first hand.

My only additional comment is a correction to a typo in my last post. It should be "origins in the early 80's" rather than 90's, which then ties in with the next paragraph.

softhaus 2006-09-28 11:14 PM

Actually in 1969 it was called arpanet or arpa. It was a DOD project that came to fruition that year. The original idea was conceived in 1962. The term iternet, big I or little i, the internet is a public network and a intranet, big I or little i with an a, is a private network.

Cheers

tickler 2006-09-29 01:51 AM

T & E:
As another old programmer(first programs in HS 1970, first job after college 1976) we used a lot of different names for a lot of different types of networks.

But here is the man himself:|bow|

In order to speculate about the future you must first know the history.

And "Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of history are condemned to repeat them."

So let's all learn, and next time let's not let anyone called "Gates" through the door, OK?

emmanuelle 2006-09-29 02:05 PM

Yes, I am quite aware of all the famous quotes about learning from the past. I was just hoping that this thread could be a little more useful and interesting :-)
