If you can get your hands on a copy of Fireworks by Macromedia, I've found that its batch processing feature is a bit quicker and easier to use than Photoshop. Fireworks also seems to be able to crunch your file sizes down considerably smaller than Photoshop with less obvious loss of picture quality. That being said, Fireworks can't touch Photoshop as far as actual image repair and manipulation--w/r/t bitmapped images, I use FW strictly for optimization.

Irfanview of course. It's free. It does all kinds of other things too, but batch processing is it's main thing.

Let's see if it's still here:

Arles from Digital Dutch for me - a little bit fiddly to begin with but seriously configurable

I use Fireworks and yes, it's really easy to use.

I have been using CompuPic since it was in beta several years ago. I have never had a problem with it and it does so much for just the one package. You can resize, compress, put your logo on a picture, move it and rename it all at the same time. Or, you can just resize a picture if you would like.

It is a kick-ass little program. Irfanview is my default viewer for every type of graphic file--it opens them up for you almost instantly--and batch renaming of pictures is speedy and painless. No matter which program you decide on for optimization, you'll be glad to have IView for plenty of other stuff.
