What have you learned since being in the biz?

This is a slant from a thread I saw on another board...

For those of you who have done this a year or longer...

What observations or tips would you pass along to newbies like me?

General, specific...whatever...as long as it's good free advice. ;)

Things to avoid...

Commong pitfalls...mistakes, etc...

That sorta deal...

TIA

Naked bodies and sex is boring but spending the money that I make off of it is exciting.

Find something that works for you..... repeat.......and don't tell anybody how you're doing it or you'll just create a shitload of competition for yourself

I've learned alot of technical things.. but the one thing that has stuck in my mind forever is something a friend posted once:

Trust no one...and be a lovely fellow.

Personal experience helped drive that point home... this is business, and some people play by a whole different set of rules then you might.

work hard |rasta|

Fonz 2004-01-16 04:52 AM

That it's getting harder and harder to start new projects.

Ramster 2004-01-16 08:17 AM

Already said but the two big things are reputation and work hard. Ruin your reputation by stealing or cheating and you'll make it hard on yourself. You have to work hard every day at whatever it is you do. Build sites/galleries, SE pages, whatever but do it every day.

finish one project before starting the next...one day I will learn to listen to my own advice.

Always adept and be ready to change things. Just becasue it worked yesterday doesn't mean that it will work today.

No matter how much you spend on content and no matter how good that content is a year from now it's going to be last year's content.

Make a plan and work the plan. If you thought it was worth the time to make a plan then it's probably worth the time to work it even if your 3/4 of the way through and it looks like crap. It always seems that it's the last 10% of the plan that makes all the money.

...don;t reply to emails when drunk either.

Actually, it's probably a good idea to turn off the computer when you're drinking - trust me on this :D

That is about the best advice you can get/give. Can't tell you how many times that came back to haunt me in the beginning - sometimes still does.

To every problem there's at least one good solution. If a problem is too complex, break it apart in smaller pieces and solve each at a time.
