has anyone tried this? I downloaded it but I don't want to try it out unless there are some good references.

The whole reason we use MySQL is so we don't have to have extremely insecure 777 mode directories on our production servers just to store a little data. If your host won't let you use MySQL, it's time for a new host.

Using files on a high traffic site is going to kill the site. To me it's pretty pointless. You have to open the file, write, then close the file and when its open its locked typically which means everything else is queued. If you have multiple files open you can run into issues with the operating system itself as well , which can cause the script to crash. Why not just use a DB and make life easier.

Maybe try doing it with SqLite which is built into PHP if you don't want to use MySql.
