Link Lists

Hello everyone.|hello| One thing I have wanted for a long time is my own link list. I have a few questions. Can I make money off of running one? If so how? And what does it take to start one?

Thanks in advance!

Greenguy 2004-01-22 08:39 PM

THAT'S A TRICK QUESTION! :D

In a nutshell, yes, you can make money by running a links list & all it really takes to start one is time.

You build free sites now, right?

GiantGnome 2004-01-22 08:59 PM

Hi GG. Thanks for the reply. Yes I build free sites now but getting board. As far as time goes, I have all day and every day. Im disabled so I spend every day at home.

GiantGnome 2004-01-22 09:02 PM

And by the way, Im not asking for trade secrets. LOL

Right now the only way I can think of making money from one would be paid advertising.

Cleo 2004-01-22 09:06 PM

It is one of the most profitable things that I do, but it took me years to get where I am and I'm still trying to get more.

I also spend a lot of time and energy promoting my link list, it is long hours of work.

The real value of a link list is having this wonderful virtual machine which is a filtered traffic pump that works 24/7 for you. :)

GiantGnome 2004-01-22 09:15 PM

Thank you Cleo. Im guessing there are lots of scripts needed right? If so, where do you recommend I go get them?

Greenguy 2004-01-22 09:37 PM

I'd recommend a script as well. I use Link Admin that was built by Richard at Richard's Realm (and installed by our very own MrMaryLou) - but it is $400 (which is well worth it if you are really serious about it)

Of course, you can do it by hand (I did my link by hand until they hit around 2000 total) & if you wanted to get the script down the road, Richard can export your current links from the html pages into his database file.

I asked about free sites because if you have a lot of them, it'll be easier to get the site looking ready for surfers & webmasters (no one wants to visit a link list that has 3 links in each category - LOL)

There's a lot of benefits to it - target traffic, your own source of traffic for new projects.

But it is a lot of work too - hopefully you'll get big & have tons of submissions - LOL

GG,

Do you have ICQ or AIM?

If I may interject 2 cent.

If you want 2 start a "link list" at the present point in time.
Make it "niche specific" and hopefully something u know and like.

Next.... if you don't know "traffic flow" and "filtering", then u may
want to reconsider that realm.

Next.. if you don't have enough of your OWN sites to fill it. Or know your realm, Then it's NOT time 2 start. In My opinion.

GG,

I wondered when that post came up from Extreme John about ripping links...

Been wonderin' what keeps people from simply copying all that hard work that you (or other quality LL's) have built and tweakin' it a bit- and calling it their own?

Clearly, way bad ethically- but can you in any way own a copyright on a list of links?

Surfn 2004-01-24 03:24 AM

AW

Yes, it's copyrighted the second it's posted.

Alphawolf 2004-01-24 01:05 PM

Surfn,

Interesting. Didn't think that was the case under copyright law.

Alphawolf 2004-01-24 02:18 PM

I found a couple threads on wmw on this subject:

The hun won his case in International court establishing the principle of intellectual property as it applies to a database/links. This was in the late 90's and the precedent for such matters.

Alphawolf 2004-01-24 03:23 PM

Great info to know for anyone wanting to start a link list.

Reading GFY (as I started to) tends to make one paranoid...in general. :D

xxxjay 2004-01-24 09:10 PM

you can make money
just be prepared to bust you balls working

i know i did

plateman 2004-01-24 09:48 PM

Yea i fucked up when i started mine i should have made it for 1 or 2 niches dont do like me and start with 40 categories LOL but if you work at it everyday someday it will be done enough to list at the other linklists and you should have traffic built up by then and having people submitting sites as i have all of the building blocks in place except i need a lot more workers to get it done

but as i add categories and keep the thing growing and then will come time that you just dont feel like fucking with it, then go back to building feeder sites because while your building your links and pages your half done link list is one hell of a hub

also The biggest thing i hate with the site is the descriptions for the pay links you could say anything to rush through it but it would make you look stupid

Thank you everyone for the great information!

I haven't been around as long as the big boys, but I'll throw
in my 2 cents worth (probably what it's worth)

First of all, it took me about 2 years of hard work to start making
a decent living, but I made a lot of mistakes, one being not asking enough questions-so you've got a head start!

If you have a lot of free sites that you've built yourself, that is a good start, since you can list those on your LL.

When you start, limit your categories to 4 or 5 basic ones (amateur, teens, hardcore, ethnic, etc.)

For those of us entering the biz at this late date, I think it's
important to choose a domain name that will be relevant
to the SE's, particularly Google... Try and find a domain with
sex, porn, xxx, etc.

One last thought...make your category files in your main domain
(don't create new directories for each category). This way, your Page Rank for each category will be 1 less than your main page. A lot of time when you make a new category, the files there are 2 less than your main page...

Hope this helps, and Good Luck!

Wow! That's a new info to me. I thought the SE always rank the index pages hingh. So www.domianname.com/teen.html will be ranked hiher than www.domainname.com/teen/ , considering all other things are similar?

Be very careful who you get your SE advice from

IMO that is a complete crock! Page rank is NOT dependent on where you put the page at all!

Lots of PR whores put every page in the root of the domain and think that there PR is better... when it simply isnt.. If that was the case every webmaster on the planet would have every page in the root.

Which of course they dont..

xxxjay 2004-01-25 06:57 PM

i don't think it matters if you use one directory per category or if you put all of the categories in one directory for se purposes

really do whatever make it easier to manage you site

i keep all my cats in the same directory

Pusher 2004-01-25 07:18 PM

Well, I guess you live and learn...sorry about the bad advice - I certainly didn't try to mislead anyone - and it's good to know, as it makes organizing things a lot easier...
