Just shows you that Europeans are as clueless as Americans.

Does this mean that you all will be sending him out to slay a dragon? I'm guessing that the dragon will win.

And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced. But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird. The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire and thunder upon them. For the beast had been reborn with its strength renewed, and the followers of Mammon cowered in horror.

Actually it changes from time to time.

And the beast shall come forth surrounded by a roiling cloud of vengeance. The house of the unbelievers shall be razed and they shall be scorched to the earth. Their tags shall blink until the end of days.

Well, Walt Disney and Franklin Roosevelt are apparently dead, and I guess the Queen wanted to Knight a living American.

This is purely a political move IMO, which demonstrates the Anglo-American trans-atlantic bond.

Well lets face reality now :)

Billy boy and Microsoft is the reason why we write this thread today. The reason why we make money the way we do. The reason the computer development has gone the way it has.

Without Microsoft we would all have our very own unique computer - none of which could EVER talk to each other on any net because there would be one zillion "standards". New hardware could only be set up if you could program you own drivers.
It would be like in the good old Commodore 64 days when you had to know your BASIC to make anything work.

That being said... I think it would be better to give the knighthood to me |jester|

Love Bill Gates or Hate him, Microsoft is a huge reason there are so many surfers online and coming online everyday. Does anyone really think that if Microsoft showed no interest in the internet, there would be so many surfers?

Even cleo, check your stats...
How many people are using a Microsoft OS? And, if they were not, how would they connect to the internet so easily? I admit, Apple is different...I am sure they include a browser as well in their OS. Or not :) I don't know....

Cleo 2004-01-27 08:11 AM

Hmmm, the internet was invented on NeXT computers.
http://web.mit.edu/invent/iow/berners-lee.html

The NeXT computer is has since become Mac OS X.

Mac users where surfing the internet using Netscape while Windows was still at version 3.

Windows 95 came out and there was Netscape available for it, but Microsoft tried to control the internet by bringing out IE for free which all but killed Netscape. Now that Microsoft has done its damage they have killed off further development of IE as a stand alone product.

Then there is that wonderful malware product called Outlook known for its wonderful ability to spread viruses and worms. Proof of this is my mailbox overflowing with crap this morning.

The trouble with Microsoft is they don't invent new stuff but only copy products that are made inferior since they know that the public doesn't know better and will use them. Microsoft just has no taste.

The fall of Microsoft has already began with IBM and Oracle dropping them in favor of Linux. Even Dell is now offering PCs without Windows installed.

Jim 2004-01-27 08:20 AM

But Cleo, you are missing my point.
Do you believe that if Microsoft did not include a browser in their OS, there would be so many surfers?

Cleo 2004-01-27 08:36 AM

Yes I do. They would be uing a browser based on the Gecko engine like Netscape is. I remember installing Netscape on all our new fancy Windows95 machines and Windows98 would have most likely shipped with Netscape as its default browser if Microsoft hadn't came out with their own browser.

The internet is popular because it fills a need, not because Microsoft made its own browser and e-mail client.

But we can give Microsoft credit where it is due. We would not have all the viruses and worms filling the internet up with annoying useless traffic if it wasn't for Microsoft.

BTW Apple does have its own browser called Safari. It is based on open standards and has its roots in Konqueror.

Speaking of browsers… what is the stats of this board as far as browsers go?

JanTM 2004-01-27 09:40 AM

Microsoft does not make the worms and viruses. The reason the Microsoft programs are targeted is because they are the ones used by 95% of all people on the internet. Afterall.. a virus that can only spread to 100 computers is no fun.

If everybody used Linux... we would have linux viruses instead.

I have to agree with Jim. If it wasn't for Microsoft we wouldn't be making a dime on porn or even having this discussion :)

Sure the internet was first something the universities had. But whats the use of a net that combines computers that only the "geeks" have access to and that requires a degree in computer science to log on to? Microsoft made it available to every Tom, Dick and Harry and thereby MADE the need for it. Its all about marketing :)

urb 2004-01-27 10:57 AM

From experience, I will not be drawn into another Microsoft debate. :)

It's a political thing and the Queen is nothing more than a puppet.

Awh come on Urb... lets debate Microsoft hehe - just kidding :)

Yeah I know it is almost religious to some people. That also why I didn't mention bad things about other types of computers |jester|

But if you look at it with just a wee bit of objectivity I think its hard to deny the influence Microsoft has had in the development of the computer/internet-age.

Common now Cleo, the guy has developed some amazing things, keep in mind it did take Mac about 900 years to catch up after he showed up after them and blew their doors off :)
