Made my day: Fake Osama Motorcade in Sydney

OK, you guys from the US might not care but I just have to post about it.

Sydney has been turned into a basket case by the APEC conference. They've put a fence around the city, snipers, checkpoints and police everywhere, they've stymied protest and spent $150 million on security so that the 21 world leaders don't have to come into contact with anyone they represent.

So yesterday the comedy team The Chaser drove 3 black cars straight through two checkpoints to within a few meters of George W.'s hotel. They had Canadian flags on the front and guys dressed in suits running along beside. Then Chas got out dressed as Osama Bin Laden and it was only then that the police worked out what was going on.

The sticker on their car said:
"This vehicle belongs to a member of The Chaser's War on Everything. This dude likes trees and poetry and certain types of carnivorous plants excite him."

Their passes were labelled "Insecurity" and "It's pretty obvious this isn't a real pass." No-one checked.

The whole thing made my day. Brilliant.

I just heard about this on the radio :D
Gotta say that I'm proud that they used Canadian flags! In yer face APEC!

Yeah it was unbelievable, they got as close as they did, lol. Lucky they did not get shot.

We watch there tv show each week, it is good value, and always get a laugh. These blokes are always taking the piss out of our politicians.

But this time they might have went to far, lol, with them being charged and such. Lot of people in high places pissed off with them, and a few people in high places sticking up for them, saying it was in fun and in no way were they out to hurt anyone (Alexander Downer - Australian Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs).

Have to follow the outcome of this one.

These guys just made complete asses of the security folks. They will be set free but they're going to be harassed for a few months.

I absolutely loved waking up to that story on CNN yesterday morning.

Today there's an update on the page Karen posted at the start of the thread. Gotta love the 'no quitters' attitude of these guys:

Three members of the Chaser team have been questioned by police after attempting to perform a fake motorcade in Sydney's CBD - one day after their colleagues were charged for entering into the restricted APEC zone in a fake Canadian motorcade. The trio (was) apparently attempting to replicate yesterday's satirical stunt - but this time using cardboard cut-outs of black cars instead of the real thing.

:D

(The success these guys had in getting so close to a target also helped me remember that one of the reasons that terrorist groups aren't more successful is that most of their leaders and members have absolutely no sense of humor.)

Turns out the guys didn't expect to get so far. Their joke was planned around being stopped by the first lot of police, so Chas could get out and do his Osama bit. When they weren't stopped they figured they'd just keep going. It was only when they voluntarily turned around - and Chas got out of the car - that the police twigged.

Polls say 90% of Aussies think it's funny. I'm so pleased.
