Someone might have been putting up links to your images in a room and then everyone left the room so it no longer exists.

Make sure you have htaccess set up to prevent hotlinking.

Ben - yeah I thought that was a possibility, if I wanted to leave a directory open for hotlinking..say for banners or pic posts I could just keep that directory open for hot-linking yes?

Yes, just put a new .htaccess file in that directory and it will over-ride the other one.

Thanks Simon. just to clarify, if I put an .htaccess in my images folder that directory and all its sub directories will run under that particular settings? And to allow hotlinking I could create a new directory called hlimages and create a new .htaccess for it specificly to allow linking and also what domains may access it?

Thanks again

Yes, the .htaccess file in a directory takes precedence over other .htaccess files in directories above it or in other directories at the same level.

Unless you have a .htaccess above your "hlimages" directory that disallows hotlinking, you won't need another .htaccess file to allow it. However, if your "hlimages" directory is inside your "images" directory, then you'd need another .htaccess file inside the "hlimages" directory to turn off the hotlink protection inherited from being inside the protected "images" directory.
