Replacing a TV Lamp
 

We have a 55" Sony Grand Wega LCD Projection TV. After saying, "why is this movie so dark" for the past few weeks I finally figured out that it needs a new lamp.

Has anyone ever replaced one? I don't think it is very difficult since when we bought it the nice man at CircuitCity wanted to sell me the extended warranty for $300. He told me that if within 3 years the lamp burned out they would send me one and I would change it. That's another thing...the lamp only costs about $150. We would have had to have 2 of them burn out in the past 3 years to match the cost of the warranty. :)

I did the lamp in the Sony for my neighbor a bit before he too died.

Just popped the old on out and popped the new one in, nothing to it.

Nice :) Of course I lost the manual so I kind of have to guess.
Did his TV go completely dark or was it just dim?

It went dim. Changed the lamp and all was well for about a month and then the top of the screen went a bit dark and soon thereafter it started doing some funky color changes. That time it needed a new circuit board that Sony replaced under warranty.

I NEVER buy extended warranties. NEVER. Add up ALL the money you save over the years and the one time you may have needed it you still will spent less on that repairs than all the warranty costs put together.

So I'm with you Jim. When I bought my TV the guy said the same thing and I said if the lamp burns out TWO TIMES in 3 years you and I and gonna have a problem. LOL

Exactly what I told the guy Ramster :) I always expected that when the lamp went bad, the tv would be dark.

I do belive my tv is way out of warranty Cleo. So any other problems would be bad :)

It just slid out the side of the TV. I think I had to loosen a screw to remove it. It took less then one minute to do.

Replacing the lamp isn't difficult. We just replaced the lamp on ours Saturday, for the second time. If yours is similar it's just a matter of taking a small cover plate off in the back, removing a small screw or two, and pulling out the old lamp. Then doing the reverse to install the new one.

It looks kind of like that Cleo. I believe it is in the front of ours Toby. I did find step by step instructions and I don't see how it can take any time at all.

It's not difficult but Christ these days you spend more than half the value of the original projector on the bulb replacement.

ehhh...the TV is still kind of pricey. I don't remember paying this much but we probably did.

It has been a great TV for us and this lamp is the only problem we have ever had.

He had plasmas but thought the picture on the Sony was better so replaced some of the plasmas with the Sonys.

The 55" was for his den. He bought it and then took a hacksaw and cut the speakers off of it.

He also bought a couple of Sony 70" for the living room and another house he owned. The speakers on these were meant to come off so no hacksaws.

Our speakers just sit there doing nothing. But, they have come in handy when our receiver took a shit.

You should have seen the faces on the TV installers faces when he took a hacksaw to his brand new TV. :D

Be sure to unplug the TV first Jim and capacitors hold a charge. Nobody likes to get shocked on Wednesday...|jackinthe

yep...turn off but leave plugged in for a few minutes so the fan can run. Wait about 1/2 hour for the lamp to cool and do the change. :)

When my monitor one blew it went very dark, i phoned up LG for a replacement and they quoted something like £60 so i got the screwdrivers out got the bulb type and got 2 for £15 :D

The new lamp arrived about 20 mins ago. Pulled the old one out (still hot) and put the new one in. It all took about 10 mins from shutdown to turn on.

It is like a brand new TV :) The old bulb wasn't even shaped like a bulb anymore.
