Anonymous domain registration???

Hello all!

My web host offers something called "Anonymous Domain Registration" for $7.95 per year.

Here is what they say : "The domain owner's name, address, city, state, email address, etc would be available through a domain whois. If you would like, your domain registrations can be privatized."

As you can tell this is the first time I've had a web host. I have no idea why my private info is readily available and mind it very much. I'd like for this info not to be available to anyone and I'm sure that's understandable.

Is this for real? Should I sign up for this added feature?

Thanks!

Most dnr's offer it for an additional $1 a year or something like that. I would look into your own DNR, don't -ever- go through your webhost for domain registration.

Yes most registrars offer privacy protection and it is indeed 'for real'. If you don't want your details publicly available then you should sign up for it :)

I thought all registrars were now offering this as a free service. Hosts will vary as to whether or not they pass on the saving.

Whether or not you should buy domains via your host depends upon what other services you want them to provide. My other business is as a non-porn web host. I can tell you there are some things which are just too troublesome if you have to ask the client to start changing dns records and other settings so you can fulfil what they are asking you to do. Far too often they try to "be independent" and just don't know what they are doing. Fine if they are happy to keep it simple, but far too often they get their "advice" from other laymen on non-techie, industry-specific boards.

The value of private registration varies.

Sure, it can seem like a good idea to hide your personal information. However, if you intend to build and submit free sites to link lists, it's something you really do not want to do. Many link lists will decline your submission for having private or anonymous domain registration information. LL owners like to know with whom they're dealing.

It depends what you want to do with your domain ... if you're planning to submit free sites from that domain it wouldn't be such a good idea since many LL reject sites for using privacy protecion ;)

I don't like them either and I ban all sites submitted with privacy protection :D

I list my porn site domains in my own name, so I keep the registration details private. Every list I submit to which has rejected me for that, I have sent an email explaining the reasons and that I am happy to give them whatever personal details they want have given the go-ahead and are listing my sites.

There are legitimate reasons for wanting to know. There are legitimate reasons for hiding personal details from every nutcase out there, too. Give and take achieves most things. ;)

I'm obviously not submitting to you, Jack. Who are you? |huh

Ok, I see what this is all about now. Actually the only reason I'm concerened is because my site is under my own name. But, I still don't see why my info is available like than on line. Just after I submitted this post I did a whois on my site and sure enough pulled up my full name, address and phone#.

I'm not in the busniess of submitting free sites so that's not a prob. Like the last poster said, the last thing I want is some upset or obsessed freak trying to hunt me down lol.

Really appreciate it guys!

I'm a horrible webmaster and a dink on the boards, but I've never received a single angry phone call, hate letter nor an angry stranger at my door. Your parents lied when they taught you about 'stranger danger'. Not every stranger wants to touch your private bits.
