How important is good English to you in your fs reviews?

I've been getting some well designed easy on the eyes submits to my list, but the English is truely incomprehensible. Even the 2257 info reads like bablefish on a bad day.

One side of me says "fuck it, it's porn and people want to see sex, not read about sex..."

But then I don't want to confuse surfers, and there may even be a search engine consideration.

Just wanted to get some input from folks that have been listing for a while...

Pagan 2008-07-27 08:42 PM

I am always instantly put off by ANY website that claims to be in English but can't take the time to spell check. Yes, it is porn, but that doesn't mean it has to be poorly done. I see sponsor material all the time that has typos and it makes me cringe. It is all over LLs too, even ones that claim to not accept sites with errors. With SEs, should we be encouraging ignorance? Where do we draw the line?

I try hard to keep all of my sites, adult and non-adult, free of typos and sloppy grammar. Extra work? No. I do use a spell checker when I have doubts, and I always proofread. Maybe it is just one of my pet peeves, but when I hit a site of any kind with typos, I go elsewhere. It just doesn't look right!

And no, English is not my first language, so I do know how difficult this is. I did grow up in California and had parents who insisted on mastery of English. My two younger brothers never seemed to catch on. I don't even think either one of them could form a complete sentence.

It depends on what is wrong - If all the text reads like it is in a mix of english/latin, then I will not list it.

If it is just the odd word here or there then it will most likely be listed. Generally works out to about 2-3 spelling mistakes per site.

I reject them & then sit back & wait for angry Russian webmasters to complain on Russian speaking message boards.

(honestly, I reject for it because I own & operate an English speaking website & I do not market to people that enjoy broken English)

ladydesigner 2008-07-28 09:02 AM

I deleted a whole slew of submitted sites this morning for poor grammar/English. |club|

spacemanspiff 2008-07-28 09:27 AM

Usually, if the site is worth listing I'll correct the description, or even re-write the whole thing. If I'm in a rush to get reviews done I end up deleting a lot of the really bad ones. That doesn't happen that often.

faxxaff 2008-07-28 09:40 AM

If it is a foreign webmaster who promotes a website from his own country that is a new find - i.e. a Malaysian webmaster promoting an unknown Malay porn site - I am more than happy to accept a good site and might comment on the lack of language skills in a positive way as the guy is trying hard to promote something new.

But if a i.e. Russian promotes Nastydollars and does not even know how to spell the word 'Lattina' LOL ... I would reject :-P

LD 2008-07-28 10:54 AM

Thanks for all the replies. I get submits where it's obvious English might not be the first language, yet it makes sense and is not a huge problem...analogous to someone speaking decent English with a foreign accent. I can also overlook a misspelling or two (I'm not a great speller myself, but have been using spell checkers since '82...:) )

But I'm getting some real gibberish here. Looks like it's going to be a reject.

Are we about the description the webmaster submits OR the grammar on the site itself?

My post was about the grammar on the site itself.

I just got this as a text link on an FS

YOU'LL BE SHOKED HOW YOUNG
PEOPLE PERVERTED NOWDAYS!

I'll let you all judge for yourself

Pagan 2008-07-28 07:23 PM

Oh, that is just sick... Now, on this last site I did, I did have some deliberate typos, but they were deliberate (Sugah for Sugar, etc mainly cause Brown Sugar for an ebony site is just too common). Generally, I don't go for such things, and I did not do it in my site description.

That example, bluemoney? Sigh... What's the world coming to?

Now, I am willing to help out. If some of the non-English speakers would like help with correcting spelling and syntax, PM me and I will give you the corrections that I see. I do have to say that I speak West Coast English (learning Texan), and always got A's in English in school. I am not a pro, just very fluent.

Greenguy 2008-07-28 11:01 PM

"Sugah for Sugar" - that stuff is fine with me. I don't mind slang & I use it myself.

It's the "PEOPLE PERVERTED" that get the boot |waves|

Maj. Stress 2008-07-28 11:24 PM

My avatar pretty much sums up how I feel about it. :D

Hehehe.. if you knew me, and you had seen the dozens of sites I have done over the years, you would know what a huge stretch it was for me to use Sugah and a few other local terms in the text. The four letter explicit words are different - they are part of the territory, and I don't object to those in proper context. I have learned about the all important y'all since I moved to Texas 5 years ago, too.

It's the careless typos!! They really slay me, especially on paysites! You would think they would know better, but they don't, or don't care. Maybe guys are not as sensitive to it as women are? I have actually not paid for something I wanted and gone elsewhere because of the typos. Something to think about guys...

Maybe he gets a higher ctr with that text - the surfer doesn't understand wtf its all about and clicks the text to see for himself :D

Deliberately using Pidgin English or depicting dialect in sales text is one thing. In fact, it requires a much better grasp of the language. Everyone would be happy with Ebonics on a site when it's related to the content.

Poor English is something else altogether. I don't promote sites that have poor English, because I know I wouldn't be giving them my cc details, and I imagine my surfers wouldn't either. In short, poor English = bad marketing.

stuveltje 2008-07-29 12:25 PM

i still cant write proper english........but then i cant even write the right way in my own language, and yesssss i did my school years and got my ...how you name it "dilpoma"? well its diploma in dutch:D...but i know what you all mean ( or is it ment?) in this thread about the writing issue...hey you are never old to learn:D

Star Man 2008-07-29 12:58 PM

I pretty much spell at a 6th grade level so maybe I shouldn't talk but when I see real bad grammar ,just as a surfer I get super disgusted. The fact that it's pornographic material makes it even worst. It's like you can't even put obscene words together coherently to sell me your over priced smut? Come on.|yawn|

annie_cash 2008-07-29 01:10 PM

When the grammar is very bad I just decline the sites. But when the problem is only in the description and the site is worth I just edit it. As a submitter, I try to write good texts and pay special attention to my english because it's not my first language and I can make mistakes (so far I haven't got any rejections because of it)

papagmp 2008-07-29 01:29 PM

Me not so good englsh - but me hard trying.

From reading your posts on here I would never have guessed English wasn't your first language! I wouldn't say you have much to worry about!

Show off! That puts you a solid year ahead of a great many adult webmasters.

I always wondered who owned DickHeadShit. I love that name. ;)
