Where Do Your Computer Files Go When You Die?
From Walrus Magazine: The Big Logoff
Here is something for you to think about. What happens to your on-line presence when you die? Do your loved ones have access to your websites, scripts and passwords? How about your on-line bank accounts (including ePassport, Paypal, etc)? I don't have a plan but my wife continues to politely nag me to start writing things down for my adult and non-adult work. Here is my question, do you have a Big Logoff plan and how does it work? |
Well - I have a semi-logoff plan. I keep most of my info in a lock box in my office closet. The necessary people know its there. Many of my sites info are in there. But I do need to update it and also include banking info etc. I do think its a very important thing to do, as I do have many non-adult clients, that would be lost without the info. Good topic artwilliams

My sis is not even computer savvy, she lives in historical eras and spends her time with the tools, etc from those ages. She is richer due to her talent and knowledge than a boring newly rich lottery winner. I have one site left, a little skimfree blog, I took care of that... a friend will come and help sis with the computer stuff. I have to put down the u/p-s in a little black book, that's all. I never have much in my epass account and it is the only one I have. Other properties like my home have been written to her name in time so she doesn't have to pay extra taxes. I just gave my jewelry to a girl friend of mine who is busy but always here when I am in need last week. I felt very sick and they wanted to send me to hospital and do new surgeries. I told them gfy. Who's life is it, anyway? And boy, I have got a lot of jewels, some from the 19th century, I have totally forgotten about them. They become worthless when you wear a hole and a canule in your windpipe where your jewels should be. Oh I have one huge pure gold ring I have designed. I try to live debt-free so she won't inherit debt. You can have lots of homes, cars but they won't bury them with you like they have used to with ancient emperors, famous warriors and whatnot. Pretty thought provoking article, Walrus, I am glad i didn't miss it. |thumb|thumb|thumb PS Kudos to the poster! |
I had a plan that included letters to Greenguy and a few others that would have been able to help Vickie go on and survive. As for her stuff...I took care of all of it and got rid of anything that would have embarrassed her.

This is one of those things that lawyers are for.

My mainstream business goes to my ex-wife's sister (it's a sister thing):D She does have to pay the equivalent child support till the kids are out of school but as soon as that happens, the company is all hers.
I'm not sure how to handle the adult stuff - not sure I want my 8-year old daughter inheriting pictures of me fucking some dude's sister. If Jack works out, I may leave it to her to manage. At least, with you guy's help, she could keep it going. Hope I don't kick the bucket anytime soon. |

I think a couple of people missed the point. I am not talking about willing the assets. Anyone can write a will. If you died tomorrow, would anyone have a list of your sites, usernames and passwords so that they could be continued on or at least sold?
|
Yes I have the info available to two close friends - and they know who to give it to. Since it changes almost daily, one knows how to get the info off my main pc too.
|
I have password keys set up, but don't think Torn has a clue what goes to what......lol It is more my area then his to worry about.
But my dad has things up where I would be able to find all the passwords and accounts. They have added me on accounts in the past so I won't have to deal with the escrow and I can take care of things. |
You're right. I have given some thought to that and my wife and daughter will have plenty of life insurance but that doesn't mean I should leave a bunch of money on the table.
I should prepare better. |
ill make sure that i have deleted all my files before i die. lol

last year was a tough one for me medically, first I had a pulmonary embolism, if I had kicked the bucket then my little internet empire would have died along with me.
One of the first things I did when I was able was get my son all my passwords and directions on my sites maintenance also told him to hit up the good people at GGandJ if he needed help. When I went in for my operation my net business was the least of my worries |
Everything on high-end machine-dual-encrypted flash drives that I rotate in my safety deposit box.
Also handy if customs wants to do some snooping.|catfight| |

I wish I could say it'd go on living without me... but I'm still learning how to crawl. ;)

i have all on paper (which i goddamn change every week because i am dropping and selling most of my domains and sites, i only keep about 50 domains and thats it!)
My hubby doesnt care about my biss, my kids are to young to take over, still there is one guy who knows what i have and all my log in things, its the guy who pulled me 8 years ago in this bizz, that lucky guy is 9 years younger then me and a very special friend for me, all i said, when i go to hell its all yours:D Hubby did agree with that, my fam has no worries when its my time to leave this world, all is on paper and there will be no money problems or other issues at all. I am pretty happy with that, i dont want my fam to worrie or to think what the hell should i do with this etc etc, all is arranged:D Btw i am even that bad that i have arrange in the will that if one of us die (hubby or me) all goes to the longs living...mmmmm it sounds strange in english, but it means this: if i die, all i have goes to the hubby, kids have to wait till he dies and other fam has no rights, and if he dies all goes to me,again kids have no rights and fam no rights, this i arranged 18 years ago, i saw to many problems with friends and their fam dying will issue, i saw guys selling their stuff because the kids demand their part of the will....thats to bad, alot dont understand my issue keeping the kids out, i just dont want that my hubby has to deal with his own kids when i die that they want their part of the ....damn how you name it, i realy dont know how what name to give it, but the kids get their part when we are both dead. |
