Choosing the right link lists.

I have decided to give this free site building a go, I have my template and content sorted for my first batch to submit to people, but basically I want to know how people go about choosing their link lists?

Do you go for the ones that you think are going to give you the best traffic period, or do you go for the ones that you think perform better for certain niches? (so your free sites would have different recip tables depending on the niche you were promoting)

Obviously I realise there is a learning curve involved in this, and my first free site isn't going to get listed by everyone, but is it OK to change recip tables once something has been listed?

For example if I get 15 LL recips, and submit, but only 7 take me, can I change the recip to have 7 fresh ones and resubmit (assuming the reason I wasn't accepted wasn't something I could easily change without annoying the other LL owners who have accepted me).

The advice usually given is build and forget, but 7 rejects is pretty high. If the 7 that reject you are large list (link o rama, etc), I would try to modify the site. Take advantage of the feedback you can get on this board. If you get listed at lor and some of the other big list, I would be surprised if you got rejections on 7 other sites.

Having said all that, I have changed recips out after being rejected (or more often, finding the list stopped taking submissions) on one or two list, and have had no problems.

Good luck!

Well justbondage if you live up to your name then you might have to be just a bit more picky with recips then most. I mean my stuff pretty much appeals to the average idiot that needs to bust a nut but your stuff is definitely geared for a smaller more sophisticated crowd.

The great thing is though, you can just post your site here before you submit it so everything go's smooth.I wish I knew about this board when I first started out. Instead I ended up submitting the biggest pile of crap 'porn site' to Persian Kitty and I got black listed for life.I deserved it.

Haha, the content is going to be fairly vanilla, I was on a big justbondage campaign when I first signed up to this site and it stuck!

I feel you on that one Star Man. When I first got here.... We don't need to get specific but it was amusing to say the least.

I looked at some of my stats. I noticed some hits from freeones. So I posted some galleries in the forum thinking it's a TGP.

They banned me |cry|

I was definitely in critical condition when I arrived here.I want to say that doing things like putting lexingtonSteele.com banners on a solo babe site (|loony|...yeah) was amusing,I'm just sort of embarrassed about it now.Granted I was on some pretty heavy stuff at the time, but it doesn't justify that kind of stupidity.

I said this in a few other threads so if I sound like I'm repeating myself, sorry. But I always tried to adhere to Link-o-rama's submit rules first off. It seemed like most of the link lists I submitted to had very similar rules so there were less "fuck, I can't submit here because this link list has different rules!" -- moments.

If I ever removed/changed a recip I gave the list one -- two weeks to reject or accept the freesite before moving on (if the link list stated that there was a two week backlog, I waited two weeks or a little more.) I eventually stopped making multiple recip pages because I found that 90% of the link lists I submitted to sent very little traffic so I concentrated on making one free site with one recip page, and I submitted the free site to a handful of the tried and tested link lists I was comfortable with.

That last question is really one for the LL guys to answer. I don't want to say they wont mind if you go changing out recips for LL's that rejected/didn't list your free site. But if a LL didn't accept my freesite and it was on my page with the "Big LL's" I would swap it for the recip of another big LL and submit there.

For me it's more about the quality of traffic than the actual link back. Solid, well established LL's will have decent traffic. You have to take into consideration their reputation and where their traffic comes from (shitty link dump sites, circle jerk, search engines, paid adverts, etc.)

Also, it doesn't hurt to poke around and research a site before you submit to it. This is true of link trades too, especially.

This is just a suggestion, but I'd be hesitant about changing recips once a site has been submitted.

Most link lists check for changes to a site, so if you've submitted the site to, say 12 link lists, any changes to the recip table will be noticed by those lists that accepted the site, and could possibly get you banned.

Cheers for the heads up - could more LL owners confirm if this is the case please?

That kind of change isn't what link lists care about. It's fine to replace a recip if the free site wasn't accepted. But don't shoot yourself in the dick, some link lists can take a loooong time to list sites. If you're not sure how long it takes a certain link list to list sites, ask in the Link List And Getting Listed forum. Surely someone submits to the same site and can let you know what the delay time is.

HowlingWulf 2008-08-30 12:44 PM

I'm getting accepted emails from a good link list for sites I submitted many many months ago. Just build and forget.

My recommendation for those just starting:
1. submit to as many LLs as you can find. Adhere to LOR rules and you should be ok.
2. after a month or so, whittle the list down to
a. those that list you
b. those that send the most traffic

I'm stable around 35 on my submit list now.

As a LL owner, here are my thoughts on recips and changing out the ones that reject and or dont list you ...

I prefer you change them out for a LL that will/does list you! Even tho many LL owners say we get no traffic from free sites .. I say we do, even if its one or 2 hits daily - and if you have 12 LL recips on your free site and only 8 accepted (just example numbers)- that means the other 4 LL are NOT sending any traffic to that freesite, which means the LL that accepted you may not get any hits from that freesite.

Also, why let the rejected LL's have free traffic from the LL's that DID accept your site?

Just my Humble and Green 2 cents on this topic!

That is so true, but what about LL with scripts that store size of the free site ?

Is there anyone who has a list of the best link lists? I know it is very subjective, but still.
I have just started to submit to link lists and have been listed at sites like Green Guy and Penisbot. They have sent me a great amount of traffic, but I haven't been so successful getting in to other lists. It would be good to know if I just have submitted to poorly maintained lists that aren't worth dealing with, because I suspect they haven't even bothered to come look at my sites, at least according to my stats.

I haven't been keeping an updated list personally, but Greenguy's LoR would be on there (the first on my list, actually) and probably PenisBot as well. What I'd do is go through GG&Jim board threads and look at poster's sigs and start bookmarking their link lists. Then go through the link lists one by one and read their submit rules, check out their categories, etc. and whittle down your list until you've got enough good potential link lists to submit to.

Also, sometimes you'll submit to a link list that isn't updated anymore, without knowing it. This isn't a definite rule, but look over the link list for a timestamp like "Links last updated [whatever date]." If the timestamp/date hasn't changed in a long time you can assume it might be dead or the webmaster is on vacation. If the link list doesn't timestamp their updates just bookmark the page, make note of the last few free sites added to their lists, and then visit the link list every few days to see if any new links have been added. If they're not adding new links then it's possible that the link list isn't being updated anymore or updated regularly (hence the reason your free sites are not being accepted.) This rule isn't hard set, it's just one of the criteria I used when submitting a free site to a link list I wasn't familiar with.

Another thing, Greenguy started the new Trusted Submitter status and rules for Link-o-Rama. A lot of link lists are following suit and have implemented their own version of Trusted Submitter. You can probably safely assume for those link lists that are implementing the new rules, they're updating their lists regularly with new free sites (as the Trusted Submitter status/rules is a fairly new idea.) So it may be a good idea to start submitting to link lists that implement their own version of Trusted Submitter so that eventually when you are ready to apply for Trusted Submitter status at those link lists, the link list owners will already be familiar with your work.

There's more info about Trusted Submitter in this thread:

Licker4U 2008-08-31 12:25 PM

In the Resources area here at the board you can click "Get Traffic" and find a list of many link lists owned by members of this board. If you follow LOR rules you should get listed almost everywhere. I submit to almost all of them and some don't send much traffic, but I saw in another thread it's good to "spread the love around". You never know where a sale is going to come from |bananna|

JustRobert 2008-08-31 01:29 PM

I agree with what Emerald is saying and what Licker4U is stating as well.

There are some benefits to building only one site with no mirrors but then again I have had sales from group 2 and 3 when none has come from group 1 |huh

I'd suggest setting up a spreadsheet of some sort so you know who and when you subbed a site. This way you do not need to submit to everyone today. You can evaluate whether it is wise to mirror the site 1 to 6 months down the road.

kelle 2008-08-31 04:20 PM

Thanks for your answers, I'll try to find the most suitable to submit to and wait for a while and see where traffic come from.
I mean, I can build free sites everyday, but what good does it do if I can't get any traffic!?
I guess I have to be patient for a while until I know exactly where to submit and then start the serious building!
