Collecting biz opinions about windows XP service pack 3

So - windows wants to make me take service pack 3 - but for the moment I've declined.

Anybody have SP3 praise or hate to share?

Anybody have their software buggered by sp3?

Anybody think it's great?

I have been using SP3 since July when I replaced some burned PC components and I have experienced no problems.

A relative that uses PS has told me that PS has been shitting on her after using it for a couple of hours though. I use PhotoImpact instead and no errors has occurred to me yet.

I just upgraded to it last week from XP SP2 Media center. I waited because I was nervous also. No complaints. No problems. In fact it fixed an issue I was having with IE where it would always crash on startup. It also (somehow) seems to have fixed an issue whereby I could not go into hibernate mode correctly.

I'd still back up though just in case. :) Also from reading it is a good idea to disable any ant-virus, spyware, or other such utilities when upgrading. Apparently there have been registry corruption issues in some cases with SP3. Afterwards, of course, they can be re-enabled.

I did that upgrade a month ago no issues that I can see.

For some reason I didn't get the auto-update notice until late last week. I went ahead and installed it, no problems so far.

It won't load on my PC's - need to deactivate a few background programs and try again.

I updated 2 weeks ago & I don't think I've seen any differences.

No issues here either.. tons of updates these days though

Thanks for posting the question Bill.. I haven't updated for the usual reasons.. but I might give it a try now.. Seems like the possible bugs have been ironed out..

I did just notice one thing - and I have no idea if it was there before or not - but I now have an option to run IE with no add ons

Quote:

Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons

All Internet Explorer add-ons, such as ActiveX controls or toolbars, are turned off. Some webpages might not display correctly.
To continue to your home page, click the Home button.
To browse using add-ons, close Internet Explorer and then start it again.
Quote:

How do browser add-ons affect my browsing experience?
Add-ons, also known as ActiveX controls, browser extensions, browser helper objects or toolbars, can improve your experience on a website by enabling content such as high-quality animations. However, some add-ons can also malfunction or display content that you don’t want, such as pop-up ads.
When an add-on, such as a toolbar, is installed on your computer, it becomes part of your browser and operating system. In some cases these programs might contain spyware. In the worst case, a malfunctioning add-on might affect the performance of your computer or cause problems accessing the Internet.
That's kinda interesting.

An ancient piece of bloatware that had the amazing ability to get 200 resource-hogging toolbars added to it without any effort on the user's part. It is rarely used and even more rarely missed. |jester|

I hate XP SP3 for the simple reason that it took away my bottom taskbar address bar. I didn't have a choice in downloading it... my pc just downloaded it on its own about 2 weeks ago. I suppose there's some setting somewhere that I could change so my computer doesn't do auto updates but hell if I can figure it out. :(

right click on the start button,

select the taskbar tab

make sure "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" is checked

then make sure you drag it one row up from the bottom.

Thanks Papa but the address bar just isn't there anymore. :(

I was confusing task bar with address bar - I never use IE - one more reason I don't
