CSS Tables

Mentioned this in the IRC chatroom this evening, but, figured it might interest a few people that are looking to move more towards CSS and away from tables.

I'm not caffeinated yet but from what I'm reading in my sleepy state of mind it looks like these tags will only work in IE 8 which makes them rather useless.

Damn, something new to learn...|cry|

The fresh CSS table-based layout that we’ve just created will display correctly in Internet Explorer 8 as well as in Firefox, Safari, and Opera; the image below shows how it looks in IE8.

:)

Thanks. I hope you don't mind me posting it on another forum.

Espresso is being made...

Ok, I copied the code into a document and it does display properly in Safari but is a bit of a mess in my editor (Adobe Golive 9) so I guess this is another sign that it is time to upgrade to the new version of Adobe Dreamweaver.

A week or so ago I spent a day trying to do a tableless gallery layout that looked like my usual design but was never able to get it to display properly in my usual three browsers but I do have a little better understanding of things like float.

Not wanting to be left behind in the evolution of html coding I ordered Cascading Style Sheets: Separating Content from Presentation, Second Edition and it just arrived yesterday.

Actually the layout does fail in IE 6.

IE6 and IE7 don't know about table-* properties, at all. Even then, if your page is not xhtml strict or transitional, there will still be differences in how things are rendered between browsers.

Spent last friday talking to a webdesigner friend to learn some more about CSS and he said that until IE8 comes out and CSS support in all browsers is more or less "identical", it's a huge pain in the ass to get things to look exactly the same across different browsers.

Thanks, cd34.

Got your message about that too and I have that marked to look at once I'm done with the newsletter today (which I should be finishing right now but need a break).

I've been slowly using more css but I guess I'll be using tables for sometime.

Nothing but CSS. I been using Wordpress since it came out and have been using CSS ever since.

CSS is a must for any webmaster these days. All my site are design with CSS all the way.

I've been using CSS to layout sites. And what I've observe table-less website loads faster.

This is nothing new, its just never been main stream because IE never followed the standard. Now that Mr. Bill has left Micro$oft they can continue to develop "REAL" software. IE8 will be standardized and bloated vista replaced with windows7.
