Recommendations for a XP Netbook

We are shopping for a Netbook for Christine's parents.

They travel to Panama and Brazil so need something small for accessing webmail and Skype plus a little web surfing and not much else. They use XP at home so looking for something that runs XP. Not really sure what kind of web access is available but I'm guessing wifi is available someplace there.

Maybe something like this Acer Aspire.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Uh... Seriously why are they getting a PC?

You should be forcing a Mac on them.

If only Apple made something small and cheap but instead comes out with does less but costs more craved out of a block of aluminum so who cares it's kewl no firewire Macbooks. |banghead|

Looking to spend less then $400.

IF you looking for something very small and cheap this one should work ,unless you find mac in this price.
But if they planning use this one more often than just this trip I recommend something with bigger dispaly.
Dell offers quite deals on Inspiron models with 13 inch dispaly for around $650
And Vista is not really different than XP.
Just 2 c.

Cheap and small which is what we are looking for but I've never heard of this brand.

MeatPounder 2008-11-10 06:31 PM

It's one of the highest rated netbooks, MSI is a wll known PC motherboard and video card manufacturer

The only thing about that Acer Aspire that I posted is it isn't running Windows. Her parents are very old and don't know anything except Windows so not sure if Linux would be a good choice for them.

It's also available with XP Home, but the cost is a bit higher.

I've been looking at these too, tired of lugging my heavy 17" HP laptop around when I travel.

For my own personal use my iPhone has replaced my laptop for accessing email and casual web surfing but for anything more then that a Netbook does seem perfect, just wish one ran Mac OS.

Back on topic.
I'm a little worried about how her parents will be able to get online in these other counties. Not sure how hard it is to find wifi in Brazil and Panama as I've never been there and last time Christine was in either of these places was over ten years ago.

It also has an internal ethernet card and RJ-45 port.

Cleo 2008-11-11 11:34 AM

But you still need to find someplace that actually has either wired or wifi internet.

Her parents stay with relatives that only have dialup. Not sure if there are coffee shops or something with internet access for the public that there is here.
