Recips via RSS and Submit via XML-RPC

What do you think about it?

First of all, I think everybody know what is RSS and I think that it could work fine for submiters and LL owners, too. So submitters will be noticed about changes (and may be additional info about changes in rules) by adding RSS feeds of each LL to their RSS agregators. If RSS feeds will be standardized, it will give a chance for programmers to write usefull scripts to automate process of changing recips on all FSs all aver your server.

Now about XML-RPC, may be someone don't know, it is a way ot data exchange between two application via http protocol, using specially composed XML document. If not to dig much - you'll have a chance to submit to LL for examle pushing button in your script admin area.

All these ideas have only aim - to make submitters life more comfortable, to give programmers a chance to write usefull scripts. It will change the static idea of FS building to another level, IMHO.

its a good idea, but it would be a pain in the ass to parse all the feeds for one recip.

borgivan 2008-12-07 04:54 AM

I think it would not be YOUR pain in the ass, but your script. Everithing you need is RSS reader and some seconds to Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, and you have all recips up to date with max delay of one day after LL owner changed rules. Isn't it comfortable ?

virgohippy 2008-12-07 05:04 AM

This idea isn't any different from auto-submit software.

Useless 2008-12-07 10:42 AM

Herding cats.

If I'm understanding you correctly:
The recips will be in the complete control of the link list owners and, being that the recips are being delivered to the free site dynamically, the free site builder could not edit them to meet the rules of opposing link lists or even to simply pretty them up to match their free site's design.

Also, what happens when I guy like me gets up in the morning and decides to modify his recip to look like this:

background-color:#000000; color:#ffffff; font-size:78px; padding:30px 100px 30px 100px;">
MY LINK LIST

p3rlphr33k 2008-12-07 02:03 PM

not just MY pain in the ass, I wasnt being a prick. If you read my post again I said it wasn't a bad idea. The idea became pointless when you stated:

some seconds to Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V
Isn't this how most people do them now?

p3rlphr33k 2008-12-07 02:04 PM

Is it just me, or do a lot of people on this board nowadays have some anger issues?

It's you. This the happiest bunch of ugly bastards I've ever been naked in front of.

A lot of people ask for opinions then fall apart under light criticism. Because they aren't really looking for opinions. They're hoping every reply will be an accolade to their intellectual prowess. That's why I usually don't post my own thoughts or ask for reviews/criticism. I mean, I could ask people what they thought, but there's a risk that I wouldn't care either way.

p3rlphr33k 2008-12-07 02:21 PM

ahhh, thanks for that. you are wise beyond the years of the great big beard in the pic!

borgivan 2008-12-07 02:50 PM

To p3rlphr33k:
You try to say that it is useless what I want to discuss. Let it be so, but I'm sure that everyone who can use this feature - will find where to use it. Thank you :)

To Useless Warrior:
About bull shit in recips. I don't have script that will automate the process, yet. I have only the idea, if people think it works, then I and many others can realise all this in special applications. But if you ask about bullshit, then I can answer - in my thoughts, no. You will get a notice for example in your special admin area. You click for example button "View" and see that all is right - then you approve them ALL in one click. Othervise - you know what to do. For example write owner that he did a mistake in recips.

p3rlphr33k 2008-12-07 07:44 PM

The industry molds itself its an evolutionary process, no one person can change it. maybe you should start requiring people to parse RSS to display your recip, if they follow good for you, if not, find a better business model. As UW stated posting my opinion was a bad idea, but while its an open book... My self, as a builder, submitter, I would not take the time to figure out 1 LL if it does not fit the rules of the others. didn't mean to offend, just giving you what I thought would be valuable input.

Is this another idea that Master-X came up with & sent you over to get comments on?

No, I'm just an enthusiast who try to make life as simple as possible :)

it's one thing if it's your own rss bunch of recips, but having them under control of someone else? nope, not going to work for me.

I mean for yourself there is a ton of stuff you can do to make recips very easy.

I mean are recips that hard to deal with in the beginning though? Make a couple tables for the categories you submit to?

Useless 2008-12-09 04:17 PM

I think I'm confused, which is to say, I'm most likely confused. |loony|

Are you suggesting that the recips get syndicated dynamically to each free site (that's what I initially thought you were saying), or would it be to some other RSS reader where they'd then be copied from, rather than going to each link list to gather recips?

Yes, it is one of the million variants how to use this.

This is another one. (But may be not to each but groups)

You see, one post and two useful applications are found! :) I think good programmer can find lots of other ideas to realize in software, server-side or desctop, doesn't matter.
