WordPress + Walrus = Broken Servers

This time I'm totally confused. Sunday, Nudes Artistically Done stopped responding. I hadn't really done anything other than post and upgrade a couple plug-ins but that was hours before the problem started.

To make a long story short:
I don't see how it can be a script problem as I've uploaded wordpress twice.

I can't see how it's a plug-in problem because I'm only using plug-ins that are running day in / day out on other blogs on that server and I'm running a very limited set of them

I can't see how it is a theme problem as it crashes running the default kubrik theme.

And yet, my host doesn't think it's the server because all my other sites are working fine and they are on that server but yet everytime they need to reset apache to get things running again.

I am at wits end.

what plugins are you running?

digifan 2009-03-31 03:28 PM

Sounds like the theme to me.. did you try other ones?

Dude, I thought you were gonna ditch WP? Me and Whitey are playing around with that Habari and I like it :)

Askimet
Dagon Design Sitemap Generator
Exec-PHP
Google XML Sitemaps
Robots Meta

But I do run these on a number of blogs with no problems

This isn't my original theme, I've got the basic Kubrik default theme running now. Untouched

This is an established blog, I won't change things until I've had a chance to learn something else. Also, since Habari doesn't have a real anti-spam protection I probably wouldn't trust it anyway.

Although, I will admit, since I stopped registering my blogs at Technorati, comment spam has dropped considerably

It had been running until I started having problems. It was one of the first I disabled and I've never re-activated it

You are one smart dude. After I replied I remembered that I had deactivated it but I hadn't "turned it off". I've always been able to access the admin area, so I went in, activated it, turned it off, and de-activated it and without a reboot of apache, the site lives!!!

Shit I should have posted this here two days ago, I might still have hair!

I thought you went bald with the Walrus Blog?

It took a few years but all of it did eventually grow back

Glad it got sorted out. I was checking the plugins compatibility and found this:

FYI

* Version: 3.15
* Other Versions »
* Last Updated: 2008-9-18
* Requires WordPress Version: 2.1 or higher
* Compatible up to: 2.6.2

I am still using wp 2.6.5 so did not install this one.

Good deal. I never run the cache plugin - too many problems in the past and also it presents some SEO problems. For high trafficked blogs, an adult CMS is someties more amenable if server load becomes a problem, something like mechanical bunny. But, you should not have a problem, in my experience, until it is something like 20k uniques per day. Then, mechanical bunny pays for itself quickly. Even more quickly given its ability to convert sponsor hosted galleries to onsite galleries and get bookmarks there as well.
