Hot To Make A Voice Recording
 

I have a mic and several software packages that came with my computer but what do I need to record a voice message? I'm guessing it will be a .wav file unless there's something better. Any info appreciated

It depends on the software, but it usually involves pressing a red "record" button with your mouse, recording your audio in the mic, and saving the file someone. Not much to it really, assuing your sound card is capable and configured correctly and you have the software. There's some good freebies if you don't.

I would not use a wav file if the file will be accessed over the Internet. And mp3 is probably your best bet.

You might have a better 3rd party sound recording software that came as an extra with your computer, but most likely not

The default recorder in windows is the sound recorder in your start menu accesories folder, but that only records as a wav file which though is decent quality is quite large

A good free open source recorder is Audacity which can be downloaded from sourceforge (the home of open source projects and a wonderful site) http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/

You could alternately record the file in windows sound recorder and convert the wav file to your desired format, assuming you don't want to install any other tools.

There are tons of free audio converters out there. I usually just go to download.com and search for specific tools in the freeware section.

I agree that you don't want to use WAV format as the file size will be absolutely huge (20-40 Megs for a single 1-2 minutes). I recommend MP3 or WMV format which is universally accepted as standard audio.

If you wanted to go high end for your audio recording i suggest Sony Acid as a professional sound studio with more options than you could ever use.

I use Audacity for a Podcast, and the quality and ease of use is outstanding. I even have a much more expensive sound editing software on my computer and I still use Audacity. You'll have to download an attachment called LAME, in order to mix down to MP3, but its easily found on the internet. Good luck, feel free to contact me...I've done a lot of work with this software for about 2 years now.
